District Council of the Lake District: Müller becomes the new district administrator – meeting on Monday!

On Monday, October 6, 2025, the district council members of the Mecklenburg Lake District will once again say “Off to the meeting!” The next meeting will take place at 5 p.m. in the House of Culture and Education in Neubrandenburg. Among other things, the agenda includes the appointment of the new district administrator, Thomas Müller from the CDU, as head of administration. Not only that is of interest, the current composition of the district council is also a topic of discussion.

The election of Thomas Müller was an exciting race. With 59.7 percent of the vote, he prevailed in the runoff against his competitor Enrico Schult from the AfD. This is a remarkable achievement for a district of this size, as there were almost 100,000 votes cast and voter turnout was a solid 44.7 percent. Müller was able to mobilize numerous supporters, including his predecessor Heiko Kärger. After the election, Müller expressed himself positively about the course of his election campaign and the broad support of his party, the CDU. However, he himself does not want to be addressed as “Mr. District Administrator” for the time being. Northern Courier also reports that there were no significant disruptions or incidents during the election, although there are some complaints regarding postal voting that will be addressed after the runoff.

A new district council with faction changes

In the new district council, the political landscape looks somewhat different than before. The AfD stands out as the strongest faction with 23 seats, an increase of 10 seats. The CDU follows with 18 seats, which means a loss of 4 seats. We are Müritzers has summarized the details of the new seating arrangement:

  • AfD: 23 Sitze (plus 10)
  • CDU: 18 Sitze (minus 4)
  • Bündnis Wagenknecht: 11 Sitze
  • SPD: 9 Sitze (minus 3)
  • Die Linke: 5 Sitze (minus 8)
  • Grüne: 3 Sitze (minus 4)
  • FDP: 2 Sitze (minus 2)
  • Freie Wähler: 2 Sitze (minus 1)
  • Bündnis „Cannabis und Bürgerrechte“: 1 Kandidat
  • Bündnis Freier Horizont: 2 Kandidaten
  • Wählergemeinschaft ländlicher Raum (WGLR): 1 Kandidat

From the Müritz region in particular, there are some newly elected mayors, Matthias Radtke (SPD, Röbel) and René Putzar (FDP, Malchow), who will take on responsibility in the district council in the future. In this election, some CDU candidates, such as Thomas Diener and Enrico Malow, also defended their seats.

Public meeting and parking

Anyone who would like to take part in the meeting can view the agenda, draft resolutions and applications in the Mecklenburg Lake District council information system. What will be particularly exciting will be the live broadcast of the meeting via the district's website, which starts at the beginning of the meeting and will include the public part. The recordings are then available for four weeks. Please note that the underground car park at Marktplatz is closed due to construction work. Visitors are therefore encouraged to use alternative parking options in the city area.
