a classic with timing

The "Dreigroschenoper" celebrated its premiere as early as 1928 and was a prime example of Brecht's socialist criticism of capitalist society. Based on John Gay's "The Beggar’s Opera" and inspired by several ballads, the piece offers a sharp view of the social injustices of the time. Brecht, who is considered one of the most important playwright in the 20th century, and his co-author Hauptmann wrote a work that not only maintains but also stimulates thinking. A hit since the first performances in Berlin, it is still a popular highlight in all cultural metropolises.

The director Holger Mahlich brings his very personal connection to the "DreilroSchenoper" and stages the play for the first time. Musically, the staging is managed by Christopher Noott, supported by an ensemble of seven musicians who use a total of 16 different instruments. Actors like Leonhard Mahlich as Mackie Messer and Yvonne Greitzke as Polly Peachum will take the audience into the dark but stirring world of the Victorian London.

A look behind the scenes

The stage design of Falk by Wangelin is particularly impressive, which visualizes the social topic of the play with strong contrast between wealth and poverty. Jessy Martens is also the well-known song "And the shark, who has teeth ..." as a Spelunken-Jenny, another highlight that is very important in the history of the music theater.

The "Dreigroschenoper" has hit high waves worldwide and was performed in numerous countries, which underlines the timeless relevance of the topic and music. As one of the most important works in theater history, it is difficult to escape the fascination and the influence that Brecht has on the theater world. This staging in Wismar offers the perfect opportunity to be carried away by the power of this classic.
