Hanse Sail in Rostock: Marine is strong and modern!

Rostock will be firmly in maritime hands again in August. The Hanse Sail, a colorful folk festival, attracts numerous visitors who enjoy the many maritime activities. Vice Admiral Frank Lenski highlights the connection between the city and the navy, which Rostock also affectionately calls the naval capital. The Navy shows its colors with playful celebrations and a variety of ship and air force exhibitions.

The parade boat this year is the frigate “North Rhine-Westphalia”, the largest and most modern ship in the German Navy, which is not only at anchor as part of the Hanse Sail, but also represents a whole range of naval operations. The Navy has been present in Rostock since 1990 and has around 2,500 soldiers in its force. There are currently five corvettes stationed at Hohe Düne, with plans to increase the number to ten.

The Navy and its challenges

The Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Defense, Sebastian Hartmann, sees the Hanse Sail as an excellent opportunity to present the Bundeswehr and create awareness of security policy issues. And that is necessary, because the Navy's tasks have long gone beyond classic naval warfare. Against the background of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, it becomes clear how important the defense against hybrid threats has become. Hybrid here means that not only military, but also cybernetic and subversive attacks on our infrastructure are the order of the day, as watson.de describes in detail.

General Carsten Breuer warns of increasing attacks on the infrastructure in Germany, while the chairman of the “Political-Military Society”, Ralph Thiele, criticizes the Bundeswehr’s lack of preparation for such scenarios. One example is the cyber attacks that endanger container shipping and thus our security of supply. Jens Meier, head of the Hamburg Port Authority, reports on attempted disruptions to the nautical systems and emphasizes that such disruptions could cause ships to run aground, which would have fatal consequences.

The Navy's Strategy

Under the Baltic Sentry operational program, German and allied ships monitor the important underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. Hartmann emphasizes the strategic importance of the region, which is characterized by energy and data cables as well as important trade routes. The pressure on the Navy is correspondingly high to secure the routes in the Atlantic for possible reinforcements from the USA and at the same time to carry out operations in the Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific.

In order to counteract the stress on soldiers, the Ministry of Defense is relying on modern material and more personnel. The frigate “North Rhine-Westphalia” represents innovative capability classes with longer operating times and the latest technology. In this context, Rostock is also described as the most important location for recruiting volunteers and increasing its attractiveness as an employer. The Hanse Sail serves as an effective advertising tool to inspire young people to pursue a career in the navy.

The latest developments show that Rostock not only derives economic benefit from the naval presence, but also maintains an ideal role as a naval capital. How the situation in the Baltic Sea region and beyond will develop remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Navy is facing new challenges that require both local and global attention.

Although many feel joy and commitment to service at the same time, we cannot forget that the celebration is not just about celebrations but also about the security of our nation. The Navy exists to ensure that we as a society stay on the right course, even in stormy times.
