Lüdersdorf on a shopping spree: Is the village shop or Norma discounter coming?
In Lüdersdorf there is movement again in the area of local supply. The town, which has over 5,000 residents and consists of eight districts, finds itself caught between the hopeful idea of a new village shop and the threat of competition from a Norma discounter. The citizens' association BümEL (Lüdersdorf Citizens' Center with Energy) is planning to establish a village shop that will be established as part of a new citizens' center in Wahrsow. The impetus came from Jörn Schümann, who visited a Tante Enso store in Glasau and came up with the idea of implementing a similar concept in Lüdersdorf. As the Baltic Sea newspaper reported, there was already a consumer shop in Lüdersdorf in the past, but it was closed for a long time, which severely limited shopping opportunities.
A village shop is planned, which will not only offer basic supplies, but can also act as a social meeting place for the villagers. The idea of such a food service is not new: The “Aunt Enso” concept combines the traditional corner shop philosophy with modern, digital sales strategies and aims to promote regional products. At this 24/7 supermarket, residents have the opportunity to choose whether they receive personal service or shop themselves. The Village shop network describes offering up to 3,000 items to meet residents' needs. In addition, the village shop acts as a social meeting place and strengthens the community.
Hurdles and challenges
However, the planned citizens' cooperative must overcome numerous challenges. Initially, BümEL is planned to be founded jointly in order to create the necessary conditions, including the purchase and conversion of the former hardware store on Brink in Wahrsow. According to estimates, the costs for the village shop will be in the seven-figure range. Funding of 200,000 euros from the “Neue Dorfmitte MV” and Leader programs could support this. At the same time, a Norma discounter could put a stop to the cooperative's plans, as the B-Plan process for Norma's building application has not yet been opened.
In the middle of next month, on June 29th, the founding of BümEL will be celebrated with a festival. On this occasion, citizens also have the opportunity to get actively involved and think about the needs for local supplies. Mayor Erhard Huzel expressed concerns about the proximity of the village shop to a restaurant and the youth club, which could influence the planning dynamics.
A look into the future
This shows that the village shop could not only create a shopping opportunity, but also strengthen the social infrastructure in Lüdersdorf. However, if the village shop cannot be realized, the plan is to focus on local energy projects in order to operate sustainably and reduce costs for residents. Neuland21 highlights the importance of such facilities for the development of rural communities, helping to combat out-migration and an aging population.
The coming weeks will show whether the village community can come together to implement a high-quality local supply concept or whether Norma's competing plans will put a damper on the project. In any case, there is a certain optimism in the air.
