Bernstorf Castle invites you: Open Monument Day on September 14th!

It opens on September 14, 2025 Hospice at Bernstorf Castle its doors for a very special open monument day. From 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., visitors have the opportunity to explore the impressive manor house and the surrounding castle park. The building, which was built between 1878 and 1882 in the historicizing neo-renaissance style, extends over two floors and is a true gem of the region. The architecture of the house, designed by architect Georg Daniel, impresses with its central wing and the two wings with a striking tower.

The castle has an eventful history behind it. Until 1945, it was the ancestral home of the von Bernstorff family, who have lived in the region since 1302. After the Second World War, the manor house had a different purpose: refugees moved in, followed by a municipal administration and a restaurant. But like so many historic buildings, it subsequently suffered from years of vacancy and dilapidation until comprehensive renovation measures were initiated in October 2010.

From renovation to “house of life”

The change towards“House of Life”began with the reopening of the castle as a hospice in April 2014. This not only represents a revitalization of the historic building, but it has also established itself as a vibrant center of village life. With more than 4,700 inquiries and around 1,400 guests admitted, the hospice has enabled contact in numerous life stories. Especially people with serious chronic illnesses, especially those suffering from incurable cancer, find support and a dignified end to their lives here.

But it's not just the guests who benefit from these offers. The renovation work created over 50 new jobs and thus sent a strong signal for the region. Such developments show how important monument protection is in preserving the historical identity of a community. According to baufoerderung.de The restoration of listed buildings is not only a question of preservation, but can also bring economic benefits.

A varied program

A diverse program has been put together for Monument Day. In addition to regular tours of the castle and the park, visitors can expect a film screening in the historic library, which shows the exciting renovation. Physical well-being is also taken care of: guests can fortify themselves with coffee and cake as well as freshly baked waffles and enjoy the atmosphere of the castle.

The successes of the renovation and the ongoing activities of the Hospice at Bernstorf Castle are impressive examples of how historic buildings can be kept alive through creative usage concepts. So if you have time on September 14th, stop by to experience history and present in a unique setting!
