Usedom leads the survey: The Germans' favorite island on the Baltic Sea!
The Baltic Sea coast is still a popular destination for German holidaymakers, and the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania holiday paradise in particular can look forward to increasing popularity. A current survey by Northern Courier has shown that the holiday islands are particularly popular. A whopping 27 percent of those surveyed favor the island of Usedom as their favorite place on the Baltic Sea, followed by Rügen, which comes in second with 23 percent.
The survey also shows that Fischland-Darß-Zingst cannot be neglected and secured third place with 22 percent of the votes. Less favored places such as Kühlungsborn, Warnemünde or the Salzhaff region are also part of the list. Many respondents noted that their connection to the places is often shaped by childhood memories and family traditions.
Popularity in the travel year 2024
The Statista Surveys show that the German coastal regions are booming overall: in 2024, around one in eleven Germans spent their vacation on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein. The largest island of Rügen, which not only has impressive chalk cliffs and beautiful beaches, but also attracts the largest number of visitors, had around 1.4 million guests. Usedom had around 1.2 million arrivals in the same year.
The popular Bay of Lübeck also illustrates how attractive the Baltic Sea is for East and West Germans. On average, holidaymakers stay on the coast for an energetic five days, with July and August being the best months for visiting the beach - temperatures usually reach a pleasant 22 degrees.
Attractions of the Baltic Sea islands
The TUI North and Baltic Sea island index chooses Rügen as the best island for a wide variety of holiday types and highlights the many attractions, campsites and the opportunity for surfing and kiting. Above all, the fine sandy beaches and the unique chalk cliffs make Rügen a hotspot among travelers. Usedom, as a direct competitor, can offer a large selection of beaches that have something for every taste.
A nice side effect: the water temperatures on the Baltic Sea have increased by almost two degrees Celsius in the last few decades, which makes swimming even more pleasant - a great first for families and sun worshipers!
The Baltic Sea coast is and remains a promising holiday destination that is characterized by its diversity and breathtaking beauty. If you haven't decided yet, you should be quick and start planning your trip for 2025!
