Election for the new provost in Wismar: These candidates are running!
An important election is approaching in the Evangelical Lutheran Church District of Mecklenburg. On July 5, 2025, a new provost will be elected for the Wismar provost. This will take place during a special meeting of the church district synod, which consists of 55 members who will cast their votes. The seat of the new provost will be in Wismar, one of four provosts in the Mecklenburg parish, which extends across different regions in the northwest of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, including Gadebusch, Grevesmühlen, Schwerin-Land, Schwerin-Stadt and Wismar. In total, the Wismar provost has an impressive 38,713 parishioners in 51 parishes, as nordkurier.de reports.
The election preparation is in the hands of a committee headed by Bishop Tilman Jeremias, and this has already nominated two candidates: Pastor Anne Hala, who is currently working at the Northern Church's preacher and study seminar, and Pastor Jonas Görlich from the Lohmen parish. Both candidates are natives of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and have a lot of experience.
Presentation of the candidates
The two candidates have the opportunity to introduce themselves to the public. Pastor Anne Hala will hold a service in Schwerin Cathedral on June 15th at 2 p.m., while Pastor Jonas Görlich will follow suit on June 21st at 2 p.m. In both cases there is an opportunity to speak with the candidates directly after the services. This is an excellent opportunity for parishioners to get a direct impression of the promises and future ideas of the two for the church in their region, as epd.de reports.
Anne Hala, 43 years old, studied theology in Rostock and Switzerland and was a community pastor from 2011 to 2021. Since 2021 she has been a regional mentor for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and eastern Schleswig-Holstein. Your colleague Jonas Görlich, 41 years old, also completed his theology studies in various cities in Germany and has held the office of community pastor in Lohmen since 2015. Both bring valuable experience from different church contexts, which can be of great benefit to the work in the Wismar provost.
A new impulse for the Wismar provost
The previous provost, Marcus Antonioli, accepted the decree for the change because he was appointed head of the “Personnel in the Annunciation Service” department of the Regional Church Office of the Northern Church in Kiel. This new election will bring a breath of fresh air to the Wismar provost, which is the largest church district in the Northern Church in terms of area and is characterized by an active community, as highlighted on the Northern Church's website: kirche-mv.de.
The election is a crucial step not only for the candidates, but also for the entire community in the region. The handover of responsibility and the election of a new part of the leadership represent an important decision for the future of the Protestant Church in Mecklenburg. Community members and interested citizens are cordially invited to take part in the services and the subsequent discussion in order to contribute their voices and thoughts - there is something happening in Wismar and the surrounding area!
