Wismar celebrates high school graduates: Best student plans career in AI!
On July 14, 2025 the time had finally come: This Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium in Wismar celebrated its graduates, being the first high school in the city this year. The ceremonial handover of the high school diplomas took place in the Holy Spirit Church, where a total of 62 students from four classes received their reward for years of learning and commitment.
The school principal, Ines Albrecht, was satisfied with the results of the 2025 graduating class, which achieved a grade average of 2.3. What is particularly noteworthy is that the girls, with an average of 2.1, performed better than the boys, who got an average of 2.4. However, last year the picture was reversed when the boys came out on top. Konstantin Günther performed best, scoring a dream grade of 1.0. He has big plans: First, he would like to complete a voluntary social year at a Protestant school before tackling a dual computer science course.
Structure and tradition of the GHG
The Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium has a long history dating back to 1905 when it was founded as a boys' elementary school. Located at Dahlmannstrasse 40, the school is a listed building in the neo-Gothic style and was originally built according to the plans of Johannes Busch. After several name changes and concept changes, especially during the GDR era, it was re-established as a modern high school in 1992. One of the outstanding events was being named the 100th MINT-EC school in 2008.
The high school graduates are among around 400 students who will be taking their Abitur this year in the Northwest Mecklenburg district. 15 graduates of the Wismar technical high school for business and 28 students of the school in Dorf Mecklenburg have already received their certificates. And the celebrations continue: The Zwilling-Scholl-Gymnasium and the Goethe-Schule celebrate on July 18th and Neukloster on July 19th.
The importance of the high school diploma
In Germany, the Abitur is considered the highest school qualification and is a prerequisite for access to universities or equivalent colleges. In 2022, around 259,300 high school graduates were recorded across Germany. Statista reports that there are differences in failure rates, which were 4.6% in 2023 - the highest in over a decade. In Germany, education is a matter for the states, which makes it difficult to compare Abitur grades between the federal states.
The Abitur is not just a piece of paper, but it opens doors for many young people. During the qualification phase, students can deselect subjects and concentrate on what suits them. The road to these results can also be rocky, but successes like Konstantin Günther's show that the effort pays off.
The Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium has not only played an important role in Wismar, but also in the educational history of Germany. The students leave school not only with a degree, but with experiences and memories that will accompany them on the rest of their lives.
