Mayoral election in Schwaan: Schauer vs. Müller – who will win?

In Schwaan, a charming small town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the mayoral election is just around the corner. On November 16, 2025, the 4,325 citizens eligible to vote will be called to the polls. Two candidates compete against each other, each bringing their own vision for the city.

Mathias Schauer, the incumbent mayor and candidate of the Independent Voters Schwaan, hopes to be able to set new standards with a third term in office. The 59-year-old lives in Schwaan and has already launched a number of projects during his two terms in office. This includes the construction of a new fire department and a new elementary school with after-school care. His plans focus on completing the projects that have been started and promoting cooperation between the city council and administration. Schauer would also like to develop ideas for a new fish sales stand on the Warnow and fresh events to promote tourism.

The challenger

On the other side is Tobias Müller, 38 years old and a new face in Schwaan's political landscape. He is running for Die Linke and lives in Rostock, where he works as a research assistant for the Die Linke parliamentary group in Schwerin. Müller brings fresh ideas to the election campaign and sees his biggest challenge in stabilizing the city budget. He also wants to create good conditions for start-ups and creative minds and better showcase the existing structures such as the artists' colony, the weekly market and the Warnow shipping.

In order to give citizens the opportunity to ask their questions, a public event will take place on Wednesday, November 5th at the Generations Campus. The two candidates will answer questions from the audience. The editorial team moderated and selected topics about which the candidates were not informed in advance. The evening will be accompanied by music from Irene and Carl Z, while snacks and drinks will be provided by the candidates. In addition, citizens can have individual interviews with the two applicants following the event.

Information about the election

The election will take place in three polling stations, which open at 8 a.m. on election day. Since there will be no runoff election, except in the event of a tie, the votes on November 16th could be decisive about the future of Schwaan. It remains to be seen who can win over the voters' favor and which plans will ultimately be put into action.

So Schwaan is clearly in election fever, and it remains exciting to see which direction the city will take after November 16th.
