The roots of Halloween
But what is actually behind Halloween? Traditionally celebrated on the eve of All Saints Day, this event has its roots in Celtic and Christian customs. Originally known as Samhain, this holiday was welcomed to celebrate the transition from the harvest season to the dark winter season. To this day, the night of October 31st is considered a time when the boundary between life and death is particularly permeable. The name “Halloween” comes from “All Hallows’ Eve,” which refers to the evening before All Saints’ Day, which has been celebrated since November 1, 835. Various customs have persisted over the centuries and have now become the norm in the USA and Europe.
In the US, Halloween has become one of the top-grossing holidays, with estimated annual spending of around $10 billion in 2021. In Germany, spending on Halloween products rose to around €480 million in 2023, with demand for costumes, decorations and makeup remaining high.
Traditions and customs changing
The traditions of Halloween are diverse and reflect different cultures. In the USA, children go from house to house in disguise and shout “trick or treat”, while in Germany “trick or treat” is often used. The hollowing and carving of pumpkins, on the other hand, goes back to an Irish legend that revolves around the blacksmith Jack. Even today, Halloween still exudes a very special magic that inspires people of all ages and creates solidarity.
Cologne residents preparing for the celebrations can look forward to the unique offerings in the Kurhausgarten. With free entry and a wealth of activities, the event offers a great opportunity to feel the Halloween fever and create unforgettable memories.
