Last Saturday evening in the Rostock Zoo the air was full of jazz sounds when the internationally celebrated pianist performedIiro Rantalathrilled the audience with his Hel Trio. Rantala presented together with on the festive stage in the zooConor Chaplinon bass andAnton Egeron drums, a rousing program that included both current pieces and homages to the legendary Bebob era of the 1950s. The jazz festival “See more Jazz” attracted numerous music lovers and the relaxed atmosphere in the zoo further enhanced the experience, as the Baltic Sea newspaper reported.
Rantala, who captivated the audience with charming anecdotes from his life and stories about his uncle, helped make the event not only musically but also emotionally enriching. The hosts of the festival, led byAndreas Martens, with around 600 visitors on Saturday evening, were quite satisfied as the number of visitors fell back into the expected range. The Friday before, several groups played – thatChristoph Möckel Trio, theSebastian Gahler Electric Projectand the bandradiuswith singerLeonora– and ensured a varied opening of the festival.
A diverse program inspires
Late in the evening theJazz Big Band Grazin their smaller line-up known as JBBG Smal. This band is known for combining jazz with influences from pop and world music. The mix of different styles of music created a lot of momentum and a good atmosphere among the listeners, who were visibly enthusiastic. Even though there weren't quite as many visitors on Friday evening, the organizers were able to speak of an overall successful event.
What is particularly impressive is thatAndreas Martensalready announced plans for the sequel to “See more Jazz” in 2026. “There is a lot of tailwind for Jazz and we are happy with the progress so far.” Intended as a platform for local and international talent, the festival seems to bring joy not only to jazz lovers but also to those behind the scenes.
