Rostock in first place: quality of life and cohesion shine!
November 12, 2025 brings exciting news from Rostock and the community of Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen. A current resident survey, known as the Heimatcheck, has shown that Rostock takes first place compared to other regions of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as well as the Uckermark and Prignitz. The results are extremely positive and provide a clear insight into the quality of life in the region.
The good reviews of the Rostock district are particularly noteworthy. It performs above average in several categories: The cleanliness achieved impressive results7.23 pointsand thus justified a top ranking. Quality of life was with7.00 pointsrated, which placed second and therefore above the regional average6.95 pointscorresponds. Strengths of the community of Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen
The municipality of Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen also performed excellently in the hometown check. The quality of life also increased7.96 pointshighly rated. Mayor Uwe Barten is pleased with these positive results and emphasizes the importance of a new bypass, which was recently inaugurated after three years of construction. This measure has reduced through traffic from 14,000 vehicles per day to around 1,000, which significantly improves the quality of life in the community.
The new bypass cost 21 million euros and includes three roundabouts and a bridge structure. The community with its 4,200 inhabitants not only benefits from improved infrastructure, but is also a recognized tourist resort with a beautiful stretch of 840 meters of coastline.
A look into the future: education and sport
Another large project is in the starting blocks: the planned education campus, which will house a daycare center, an after-school care center, a primary school, a sports hall and a sports field. The location for this is on a five-hectare area between Elmenhorst and Lichtenhagen. The design planning has already been completed and those responsible are now waiting for funding from the state. Construction is scheduled to start in 2027 and will significantly improve the educational situation in the region.
The community is particularly proud of the LSG Elmenhorst sports club, which has 550 members and is actively involved in the youth sector and thus contributes to the promotion of young sports.
Life satisfaction in Rostock
It's not just the municipality of Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen that shines, but also the Hanseatic city of Rostock itself. According to a survey by the EU Commission, Rostock ranks eighth out of 83 cities surveyed in Europe in terms of life satisfaction. Another reason to celebrate! The citizens appreciate the proximity to the Baltic Sea, the good shopping opportunities and the North German mentality. Rostock also achieved first place in the job satisfaction category and is also highly rated for family friendliness and air quality.
But there are also challenges to overcome: The social divide is reflected in the widely varying rental prices between districts such as Warnemünde and Lichtenhagen. Sociologist Steffen Mau emphasizes that social problems have less of an impact on life satisfaction than other factors.
