Rostock’s composting plant Up de Schnur” is being expanded enormously!
A lot is happening in the world of waste management in Rostock. The exciting news comes directly from the “Up de Schnur 3” composting plant in Hinrichsdorf, which is soon to be expanded. The Rostock municipal waste disposal company has officially initiated an approval process in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act and plans to increase the approved annual quantity from 3,000 to around 7,000 tons reports NDR.
Since it went into operation in 2021, the composting plant has already established itself as an important location for processing green waste from urban green spaces and garden waste from Rostock households. In recent years there has been a noticeable increase in green waste, which is due to both public and private greening says the Rostock city administration.
Planned expansion and its effects
The planned expansion will primarily affect the composting area. However, the processing method remains unchanged, which means that composting continues to take place in open triangular heaps in order to meet the requirements of the Organic Waste Ordinance and the quality standards of the Federal Compost Quality Association (RAL-GZ 251).
It is important that the existing facilities - including scales, storage areas, equipment containers and leachate collection basins - are not changed. This stability should benefit the employees of the Rostock municipal waste disposal company, who can continue to work in the usual manner notes NDR.
A look into the future
Construction on the expansion is scheduled to begin in 2027. Managing director Birger Bludszuweit also emphasizes the location's convenient location, which leads to shorter transport routes and reduced fuel consumption reports the city administration.
It remains easy for Rostock citizens to hand in their garden waste free of charge at four city recycling centers. This ensures that green waste will continue to be disposed of and processed in an environmentally friendly manner in the future.
With all of these measures, Rostock shows that it is committed to growth and sustainable development. The expansion of the “Up de Schnur 3” composting plant is another sign that the city is actively addressing the issues of the environment and waste management.
