Seniors in focus: Event for the Day of the Elderly in Rostock!

October 1, 2025 marks the anniversary of International Day of Older People, an occasion that has been celebrated since 1991. On this day, the needs and rights of older people should be brought into focus City of Rostock reported. As part of this year's celebration, the Rostock Senior Citizens' Advisory Council will be holding a panel discussion on October 1st from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Citizens' Hall of the town hall. The aim is to promote exchange with politicians and administration and to discuss topics such as social participation, age discrimination and care.

Special guests, such as Anke Knitter, the 2nd Deputy President of the Citizenship, and Senator Steffen Bockhahn, will take part in the discussion. However, registration is required to participate as places are limited. Those interested can register by sending an email to the Senior Citizens' Advisory Board.

Take action together

On October 1st there are not only celebrations in Rostock; Numerous activities are taking place across the country. Under the motto “YES to old age”, the Federal Association of Senior Citizens' Organizations (BAGSO) calls on people to get actively involved and to implement their own ideas to promote a positive image of old age. This initiative aims to counteract age discrimination and make the realities of older people's lives visible. A variety of event formats are available, from readings and discussions to flash mobs and postcard campaigns. A special way to make people visible are chalk campaigns on public areas, where personal messages can be left, accompanied by the hashtag #JAzumAlter, like the Senior Work Forum represents.

The motivation behind these activities is to recognize the social importance of age and to promote dialogue between generations. This is intended to send a signal against the widespread negative images of old age, which also restrict their rights in many areas, such as this German Institute for Human Rights notes.

Strengthen the rights of older people

One of the major challenges resulting from the unfavorable images of old age is the protection of the rights of older people. According to reports, a UN working group began identifying protection gaps in 2010 to strengthen the rights of these people. A rethinking of the healthcare system is particularly necessary in order to improve access to healthcare services for older people and reduce discrimination. The goal is to strengthen older people's self-perception and to enable them to participate actively again from their perspective.

Overall, it shows that the International Day of Older People is not only an occasion for celebration, but also offers a platform to draw attention to important issues and initiate concrete changes. Whether in Rostock or elsewhere, everywhere there is an incentive to actively organize this day and to bring the concerns of older people to the fore. Dialogue between young and old is needed more than ever.
