Administration in Schwaan at the limit: city representatives demand help!

What's going on in Schwaan? The city has big plans, but they are stuck in the gray bureaucracy. Currently on the agenda are projects such as the construction of a new school, the urgently needed fire department, a sports hall and the redesign of the old gasworks. A tourist meeting point at Krasemannschen Hof and a photovoltaic system are also in the pipeline. But despite these ambitious plans, it seems as if the pace is falling by the wayside. Loud Northern Courier There has been a backlog of processing for years that urgently needs to be addressed.

The CDU and the athletes' association are now calling for a working group to relieve the administration. The CDU politician Ina Blank emphasizes that this is not about accusations, but rather about support. The intended working group, under the leadership of Mayor Christine Hirsch (CDU), is intended to set priorities in order to tackle urban investment and maintenance tasks more efficiently. However, Mayor Mathias Schauer (UWS) sees the matter critically. He explains that the administration only implements what the city council decides and emphasizes that the overload is not due to the commitment of the employees.

A difficult interaction

An application involving around 40 candidates to form the working group met with resistance in the city council. Despite some support, the motion only received four votes in favor and one abstention, while eight members voted clearly “no”. Schauer warns that an informal working group could undermine decision-making processes. He also criticizes the concentration of offices at Hirsch and refers to the distribution of votes in the local elections that took place in June 2024, in which Steffen Rißmann received a strong vote with 58.1 percent of the vote ND-R News.

The problem of citizen participation is a central issue in politics. As in the Federal Agency for Civic Education described, the inclusion of citizens in decision-making processes is not just a pipe dream, but has already been successfully implemented in other regions, such as Rhineland-Palatinate. Citizens should be able to contribute their knowledge and ideas to increase the acceptance of reforms and projects.

Support through citizen participation could also help Schwaan to overcome the current challenges. This could not only help advance urgently needed projects, but also strengthen trust between the administration and citizens. Because only together can the city be made fit for the future. The fact that political participation is worthwhile is shown not only by the positive experiences in other municipalities, but also by the possibility of avoiding failure.
