Drama at the campsite: Witness saves family from hellfire!
Torsten S., a 59-year-old witness in the “contract murder trial” at the Schwerin Regional Court, committed a courageous act on June 24, 2023. On the night of June 24th, while he was staying at a campsite in Dömitz, he was woken up at around 1:45 a.m. by the smell of fire smoke. Without hesitation, he acted quickly and rescued his partner and her eleven-year-old son from a blazing mobile home, which was fully ablaze just a few minutes later. Torsten S. reported in court that they escaped “at the last second” and that he pulled the boy outside while the mother was disoriented in the crowded, smoke-filled vehicle. “I guided them with my voice,” he explained.
The prosecution accuses Silvia S., Torsten's ex-wife, and Daniel J., a 46-year-old acquaintance, of attempted murder and aggravated arson. Apparently Silvia S. wanted to set the motorhome, worth 110,000 euros and still brand new, on fire with fire accelerant. Both parties involved are currently in custody and deny the allegations. Torsten S. rules out a technical defect in the vehicle; Even the aggressive separation from Silvia S. after 35 years of living together was marked by arguments about property and assets.
The serious accusations
Torsten S. expressed suspicions that his ex-wife may have been informed about his weekend trip to Dömitz. He discovered a tracking chip in his company car, which he reported to the police; however, the investigation was subsequently discontinued. It wasn't until a year after the fire that the whole story came to light, when Daniel J. confided his intentions to an acquaintance. These dramatic events have not only had a lasting impact on the lives of Torsten S., his partner and their son - they are still suffering from the consequences of severe smoke inhalation.
Arson in Berlin-Marzahn
While the trial is underway in Schwerin, another incident in Berlin-Marzahn shows how serious the issue of arson is. On Sunday evening, a major fire broke out in three warehouses on Pyramidenstrasse, affecting several trucks and wooden pallets. Over 200 firefighters and up to 225 people were deployed to tame the flames. Luckily no one was injured. The fire spread to propane gas cylinders and spread over 3,500 square meters. Firefighting work was in full swing until midday the following day, while residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed. The police have started an investigation into serious arson.
Worldwide fire statistics
The most common causes of such fires are often documented by institutions such as the Center of Fire Statistics (CFS). The current report on world fire statistics shows that a large number of fires and their causes were recorded between 2020 and 2022. What is particularly interesting is that over 20,700 fire deaths and more than 70,000 injuries were identified in the 2020 data, underscoring the importance of responsible use of fire and open flames.
The comprehensive analysis of the causes of fires and the constantly updated statistics from the fire and rescue services are intended to help better understand and combat the dangers posed by fires worldwide. The CTIF contribution to improving fire data collection is a step in the right direction.
Whoever deals with this highly dangerous topic should never close their eyes to the potential risks. The recent incidents in Schwerin and Berlin are reminders of how quickly a careless move can turn into a catastrophe.
