Friedman impresses at the 20th Johannes Stelling Prize in Schwerin!

Today, October 28, 2025, an important award ceremony took place in Schwerin: The SPD Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliamentary group awarded the Johannes Stelling Prize for the 20th time. This honor reflects the commitment to social cohesion and the fight against hatred and racism in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The evening's keynote speaker was the well-known Professor Michel Friedman, a Jewish journalist, lawyer and philosopher who advocates for an inclusive society.

The awarding of the prize comes at a turbulent time. The announcement of the award came against the background of a debate that revolved around Friedman's invitation to the Hannah Arendt Week 2026 in the “Uwe Johnson” literary house in Klütz. Due to internal discussions in the main committee of the Klütz city council, the invitation was withdrawn, which led to a major controversy and ultimately to the resignation of Mayor Jürgen Mevius. Oliver Hintz, the head of the literature house, also has to vacate his post due to the events.

The Johannes Stelling Prize

The Johannes Stelling Prize commemorates the Social Democratic Prime Minister Johannes Stelling, who was murdered by the National Socialists in 1933. Julian Barlen, the leader of the SPD parliamentary group, emphasized in his speech that Friedman was a role model for many with his clear positions against anti-Semitism, right-wing extremism and racism. Friedman himself, the son of Holocaust survivors, was critical of the AfD, which he described as a “party of hate.”

The controversies surrounding the current award ceremony clearly showed how relevant the fight against discrimination and for respectful coexistence still is today. The events in Klütz not only have an impact on local conditions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but also shed light on the nationwide social debate about tolerance and diversity.
