Massive traffic restrictions in Schwerin: construction site from July 25th!

In Schwerin, remarkable changes in city traffic will begin on July 25th. A comprehensive renovation of the tracks and stops on Lübecker Straße, Grevesmühlener Straße and Kieler Straße will result in significant restrictions that will last until September 6th. This has a direct impact on various lines, including tram line 2 and bus lines 17 and 18. How Schwerin local reported, the aim of the measure is to modernize the infrastructure and provide barrier-free access for all passengers.

The preparatory work will begin on Monday, July 21st. From Friday, July 25th, at 8:00 p.m., a rail replacement service will be set up for tram line 2 between the main train station and the Lankow settlement. During this time, tram line 2 only runs between Hegelstrasse and Marienplatz and then runs in the direction of Kliniken to line 1. If you want to go to Lankow-Siedlung, you have to change to the alternative service at the main station, as the Kieler Strasse stop is not served.

Details about restrictions

In addition, the Kieler Straße stop will be replaced by a replacement stop on Gadebuscher Straße. Bus traffic on Kieler Straße has stopped completely. Anyone traveling with bus lines 17 or 18 will have to be prepared for changes: line 17 will only run between Friedrichsthal and the Lankow settlement, while line 18 will be rerouted via Ratzeberger Straße. Replacement stops have been set up on Büdnerstraße and Eutinier Straße, while the Ziegelhof, Rahlstedter/Gadebuscher Straße, Rahlstedter/Kieler Straße, Eutiner/Kieler Straße and Kieler Straße stops have been completely eliminated. This is not an easy situation for many commuters and students!

Private traffic in particular will be severely restricted: the intersection area of Lübecker/Grevesmühlener/Gadebuscher/Kieler Straße will be partially or completely closed. If you want to go into the city, you can only arrive via Gadebuscher and Lübecker Straße; It is not possible to turn from Gadebuscher Straße into Grevesmühlener Straße. The entire construction site is only permitted for vehicles up to 3.5 tons, so wide bypasses are recommended. For further information on timetables, diversions and alternative stops, the local transport company's website and the customer center at Marienplatz are available.

Future construction work

But it's not just the current construction sites that are causing excitement: on March 3, 2025, further measures will begin on Franz-Mehring-Straße, which will also affect tram line 2 and bus lines 12 and 14. This work also entails adjustments and new routes, with stops such as the town hall no longer being served.

There is great anticipation of a modernized transport infrastructure in Schwerin, but first passengers and drivers have to deal with the numerous diversions and restrictions. A good hand is required, not only when navigating through the construction sites, but also when planning daily routes.
