Speedy night drive ends in chaos: BMW driver caught on drugs!

A 48-year-old BMW driver caused a stir in a late-evening traffic accident on July 7th on the A24, between Zarrentin and Gudow. He collided with a Mercedes van around 10:40 p.m., causing significant damage. The accident site, near the Gudow service area in the direction of Hamburg, was characterized by road damage with a reduced speed limit of 60 km/h. Baltic Sea newspaper reported that the driver of the BMW was not paying attention when changing lanes and drove into the van.

The police quickly determined that the driver involved in the accident was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. A breath alcohol test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.33, and a preliminary drug test indicated that he was influenced by amphetamines and methamphetamines. He was taken to the hospital in Hagenow to have a blood sample taken, where his driver's license was also confiscated. The driver of the van, a 56-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital. Northern Courier emphasizes that alcohol and drugs are often the causes of traffic accidents with injuries.

Statistics and dangers

According to the 2024 accident statistics, alcohol is on the list of the most common causes of accidents, right behind excessive speed and failure to adhere to distance rules. While drug use while driving is being recorded less often, research shows that the number of drug-related offenses is increasing. In 2024, for example, the Schwerin police station counted 165 alcohol violations, while the number of drug violations in Neubrandenburg was 589. Bussgeldkatalog.de points out that drugged driving poses a serious danger not only to drivers but also to other road users.

The alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5, but many believe that a drink or two is harmless. Even small amounts of drugs can have significant consequences. The sanctions for drugged driving are clearly regulated: from fines and points in Flensburg to a driving ban of at least one month. In addition, a medical-psychological examination (MPU) can be ordered in order to regain your driving license.

Consequences for the person who caused the accident

The BMW driver now faces criminal charges for endangering road traffic while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Whether he learns from the consequences or continues to be dangerous remains to be seen. The fact is that the material damage is estimated at around 45,000 euros and both vehicles were no longer drivable after the accident and had to be towed away. The incident once again highlights the alarming reality of drugs and alcohol driving, which still play a major role in Germany.
