Shock in Schwerin: Police officer attacked at night and knocked unconscious!

In a shocking escalation of violence on Saturday night in Schwerin, two police officers were attacked during an operation on Münzstrasse. At around 2 a.m. the officers, a 28-year-old police officer and a 27-year-old police woman, were called to assist in a dispute between several people. When they arrived, they were faced with an angry group of 15 to 20 people. The incident ended with a brutal attack on the emergency services, which was grossly disproportionate to the original dispute, as Bild reports.

The 28-year-old police officer tried to take one of the attackers to the ground when a second man kicked him in the head from behind. This caused the police officer to briefly lose consciousness. Meanwhile, his colleague resisted the attacks and tried to protect her partner. Fortunately, she was not injured, but the situation continued to escalate and two other officers, aged 25 and 31, were injured during the arrest of two 22-year-old suspects. The group around the attackers fled after the attack, which does not make the investigation any easier.

Investigations are ongoing

The police have now initiated proceedings for grievous bodily harm, resistance to law enforcement officers and physical attacks. The current status of the two injured officers shows that both the 28-year-old police officer and the 27-year-old police woman are unfit for duty. The background to the dispute and the identity of other possible participants are currently unclear, as the reporting by [NDR](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/westmecklenburg/Schwerin-28-Jaehriger-Polizist-bei-Attack-gesundheits-tritt,mvregio Schwerin4394.html) makes clear.

The incident once again raises questions about the safety of law enforcement officers. In Germany, the issue of police violence has come into greater focus since the George Floyd case in the USA. A study by the Goethe University Frankfurt, which was published in Deutschlandfunk, examines how often excessive use of force by police officers occurs. The study shows that young men in particular are often victims of such violence, while the officers themselves often suffer from stress and excessive demands.

A system in transition

The study's conclusions suggest that it is not just a matter of individual incidents, but that there is a broader problem within police structures. These findings could also be important in Schwerin, where officers found themselves in a tense situation where a lack of communication and inadequate operational planning may have contributed to escalations. Therefore, a reform of police training and development is considered necessary to avoid such incidents in the future.

It currently remains to be seen how the situation will develop for the injured police officers and what consequences the incident could have for the safety of law enforcement officers in Schwerin.
