Schwerin celebrates: Foundation of the World Heritage site at the old garden!
There is reason to celebrate in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The city of Schwerin recently renamed the square around the bronze city relief in the Old Garden “World Heritage Square”. This measure is a direct implementation of a resolution by the city council of March 24, 2023, which underlines the importance of the residential ensemble, which has played an outstanding role since its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2022, on July 27. On the aforementioned anniversary, a ceremony is planned at 1 p.m. on Graf-Schack-Allee, followed by a public afternoon program. All Schwerin residents and guests of the city are cordially invited to celebrate. The program includes musical performances, guided tours of the impressive Schwerin Castle and culinary offerings in the castle's inner courtyard. A colorful afternoon for young and old is guaranteed!
The Schwerin Residence Ensemble
The Schwerin residential ensemble, which includes over 30 important objects, including the magnificent residential palace, plays a central role in the history of the city and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Welterbe Schwerin emphasizes that the architecture of the various historical buildings that can be found here is a reflection of Schwerin's political importance over the centuries.
The ensemble combines a remarkable diversity: it contains not only government and administrative buildings, but also cultural and educational institutions such as museums and theaters. These monuments enrich the cultural life of the city and testify to its history and architectural diversity. In connection with military buildings and former suppliers to the court, Schwerin shows numerous facets of its social development.
UNESCO World Heritage
The inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List is proof of Schwerin's cultural and historical relevance. UNESCO lists numerous outstanding sites worldwide that are important testaments to human culture and history. This also includes the residential ensemble, which not only attracts guests but also raises awareness of the region's valuable history.
The commitment to preserving and honoring these unique sites is not only important for all Schwerin residents, but also contributes to identity formation and cultural exchange within and outside of Germany. The renaming to “World Heritage Site” is therefore not just a symbolic act, but an invitation to everyone to help shape Schwerin’s history and future.
So if you have the time and desire on July 27th, you should make your way to Schwerin and don't miss the celebrations. A unique experience awaits everyone who is interested in the beauty and culture of this special city!
