Schwerin in climate change: Citizens protest against the 2045 target!

Today around 80 people gathered at the market in Schwerin to make clear their displeasure with the city council's decision to postpone the climate goals. The vigil, organized by the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) in Schwerin, took place as part of the city council meeting and attracted numerous citizens who were committed to consistent climate policy. Among the protesters, posters reading “Stay the course 2035” and “Climate change won’t wait” were held up. Many handed out leaflets to highlight the urgency of the situation.

The city council meeting included crucial proposals on climate policy. Mareike Herrmann from BUND warned urgently of the consequences that a postponement of the climate neutrality goal to 2045 could have. An open letter that she prepared together with 18 companies and over 500 citizens underlines the broad support for the city's original climate goals, which were set for 2035. “We must not overturn the climate goals,” Herrmann called on the city representatives to urgently reject the two existing applications: on the one hand, the CDU’s request to postpone it by ten years and, on the other hand, the AfD’s request to abolish the climate goals altogether.

The meeting in live stream

What was particularly noteworthy was that the meeting was livestreamed to the marketplace, which allowed many activists to follow the debate on site. At the end of the meeting there was a surprising turnaround: the majority of the city council actually voted to extend the climate target period until 2045. The AfD's request was rejected, which initially gave the demonstrators a hint of hope.

However, CDU parliamentary group leader Gert Rudolf emphasized that, despite all the adjustments, his party did not want to give up on the climate goals, but was striving for a realistic approach. He received approval from the AfD parliamentary group, which described this as a positive step in the right direction. Nevertheless, there remained a lot of dissatisfaction: the Greens, SPD and Left expressed criticism. Arndt Müller from the Greens reminded us that the city had already committed to climate neutrality by 2035 in 2020. Gerd Böttger from the Left warned that a delay could not be an option given the urgency of the climate challenges.

A disappointed protest

The SPD voted unanimously against the extension and described the climate goals as necessary and essential. Disappointed, many demonstrators left city hall after watching the vote. The feedback from citizens shows how important it is to them to adhere to the climate goals and that they will continue to actively support the environment.

In a time when climate change is not long in coming, such decisions by the city leadership are incomprehensible in the eyes of many. The demonstrators show that citizens are ready to stand up for their beliefs and may be prepared for further actions to put pressure on decision-makers.

The events in Schwerin serve as a clear reminder that the fight for climate justice is far from over and that every individual is called upon to get actively involved. The discussion about climate goals will remain an important topic in the coming weeks and months.
