Schwerin is planning a large state horticultural show in 2035 – Prime Minister advises!

There is exciting news for garden and nature lovers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: A new state garden show is planned for 2035 in Schwerin. On July 29th, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) will discuss the proposal in detail. The Pro Schwerin association has already taken the initiative and brought the idea to the state government. “The potential of this garden show is positive,” says Schwesig, pointing out that Schwerin has previously successfully hosted the Federal Garden Show in 2009, which contributed to a massive tourist upgrade of the city, as Nordkurier reports.

What is actually behind these garden shows? They have been known in Germany for over 50 years and aim to improve the quality of life and promote local development goals. It's not just about gardening. Garden shows are also an important source of inspiration for urban development. They help to eliminate urban development problems and create new green oases, as ABES describes.

Financial challenges and opportunities

But with big plans come big challenges. Millions of investments are required to hold such garden shows. At the moment it doesn't look like the financial situation in Schwerin is going to be easy, as there is a budget freeze. The recently canceled Federal Garden Show in Rostock due to a lack of funds also shows that the path to implementing garden shows is not always easy. In general, these events for federal and state garden shows require budgets in the mid to high double-digit million range, which must be supported by entrance fees, sponsorship and funding from the federal and state governments.

The importance of garden shows goes far beyond the short-term construction of flower beds. This often results in the creation of new green spaces and open spaces that sustainably change the cityscape. Incidentally, the first state horticultural show in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania took place in Wismar in 2002 and contributed to the creation of the community park. A good example of how garden shows can improve the quality of life in cities through natural beauty and design.

Review of the Federal Garden Show 2009

The last Federal Garden Show in Schwerin in 2009 was a great success. She presented impressive garden designs, such as the “Garden of Colors” entrance area, which impressed with a variety of colors and shapes. The design was done by the landscape architects Breimann and Bruun and brought visitors a lot of joy with their concept, coordinated color spectrums and varied planting in full bloom. Childlike joy also arose at the “Garden of Grasses,” where a modern counterpart to the historic castle garden was presented, says [Ingrid Gock](https://ingrid-gock.de/projekte/gartenschau/bundesgartenschau-Schwerin-garten-des-21-jahr Jahrhunderts/).

The question now remains: Will Schwerin be able to fully exploit its garden potential again? The signs are correct, but a lot depends on the upcoming financial advice and the discussions with those responsible. One thing is clear: garden shows are big business and could make Schwerin another tourist attraction if everything is planned and implemented well.
