Schwerin State Museum celebrates brilliant reopening!

A special day is coming up in Schwerin: On October 30, 2025, the Schwerin State Museum will finally open its doors again after four years of extensive modernization work. There is great anticipation, not only among museum employees, but also among art lovers in the region. After many months of change, the museum shines in new splendor.

The extensive renovation not only gave the museum a fresh coat of paint, but also changed its structure. With three new entrances, an inviting café and a book shop, the facility now offers its visitors an all-round experience. The museum's director, Pirko Kristin Zinnow, highlights the successful combination of old and modern art. Works by modern artists of the 20th and 21st centuries are now shown in the basement, including impressive pieces by Günther Uecker, Cornelia Schimmele and Wolfgang Mattheuer.

Exhibition concept and redesign

The innovations also extend to the presentation of the Old Masters on the upper floor, curated by Gero Seelig. Particularly noteworthy is the exhibition of three Rembrandt paintings from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, which will be on display when it reopens. Works by artists such as Matthias Wegenhaupt and Otto Niemeyer-Holstein from Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania can also be seen.

The financing of the modernization was generously supported by the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation with 7.5 million euros and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 1.8 million euros. Architect Marlene Wetzel led the renovation and also thought of a suitable color scheme for the walls. The result of the careful planning and implementation will now be presented in full on Thursday, October 30th.

Free entry for everyone

Great news for anyone interested in art: visitors can enter the museum free of charge for the next four years. The State Museum's 143-year history will be revitalized with this reopening, and those responsible are confident that the modernization will prove to be a major benefit to the cultural landscape.

However, the museum extension from 2016 will remain closed for the time being, and renovation is planned until the beginning of 2027. However, this will not diminish the anticipation of returning visitors.

In Germany, the modernization of cultural institutions is generally supported. State Minister Wolfram Weimer has released 29 million euros for the renovation and modernization of 20 nationally important cultural institutions, according to a report by the State Ministry for Culture. This makes it clear that such institutions are important not only for their local audiences, but also for cultural discourse across the country. Institutions such as the Folkwang Museum in Essen and the Kleist Museum in Frankfurt an der Oder are on the list of funded projects from 2025.

In this respect, the Schwerin State Museum is part of a larger whole that revolves around the preservation and promotion of cultural values. Whether old masters or modern art – all art lovers will get their money’s worth here. Stop by and discover the new possibilities the museum has to offer!
