Dispute in Schwerin: Mayor Badenschier faces resignation and climate goals in danger!
Things are currently looking turbulent in Schwerin. Led by Mayor Rico Badenschier, who is taking action again before resigning, things are seething in the city council. The mayor has objected to the increase in a subsidy for addiction counseling, a decision made by city officials. This could lead to legal disputes between the city administration and representatives, such as the one that cannot be ruled out Baltic Sea newspaper reported.
Another exciting topic is the planetarium in Schwerin. This will be closed from November 15th to 30th for renovation work. Regular operations will resume from December 1st, with events on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Climate goals in danger?
The city council is under additional pressure from civil society initiatives that are vehemently committed to maintaining climate neutrality goals. A vigil before the city council meeting is intended to remind city officials not to give up on the goal of climate neutrality by 2035. These events take place in front of the main committee, where the CDU is discussing postponing the climate target by ten years. Johanna Köhnlein from BUND Schwerin warns that such a step backwards not only endangers the city's credibility, but also its economic dynamism. This clarifies the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany.
The background to these contentious issues are concerns about the economic situation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At the annual reception of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), Chamber President Matthias Belke said that the situation was worrying. Training places and investment spending must be secured as Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig combines positive economic signals from the northeast with a promise of high investment spending over the next two years.
New impulses from the catering industry
In the city's restaurants, however, people are optimistic. Christian and Marie Messe, who took over the traditional restaurant “Zum Stadtkrug” in 2023, are bringing a breath of fresh air to Schwerin’s gastronomic scene. Their two restaurants are very popular and show that successful economic work can be done in the city.
So while political and economic tensions are building, the current situation in Schwerin remains exciting. The developments surrounding the climate goals and the overall economic situation could soon have a decisive influence on the future of the city.
