Triumph and drama: Flying Dragon wins MidsummerSail 2025!
Last Friday, the MidsummerSail 2025 impressively showed what sailing has to offer in terms of challenges and victories. The “Flying Dragon”, a Dragonfly 40 trimaran, was the first boat to reach the yellow buoy of Töre, thereby securing victory in the tenth edition of this legendary regatta. The crew under skipper Jens Thuesen covered the distance of over 1,670 kilometers in a time of 5 days, 19 hours and 54 minutes - just over a day longer than the winning boat of the last MidsummerSail. Nevertheless, no new record was set, as NDR reported.
The challenge was great because changing wind directions and strengths caused problems for the “Flying Dragon”. A weak wind after the start in Wismar contributed to the missed record time. In addition, unforeseen weather conditions awaited the participants as a low pressure area made the competition even more hectic and at the same time led to around 20 sailing boats giving up.
A challenging race
One of the prominent participants was Rüdiger Schwarz, who competed with his trimaran “Avanza”. During the races, a dangerous incident occurred when his boat capsized in around 20 knots of wind. Fortunately, this maritime emergency ended lightly: Schwarz was able to save himself on his overturned boat, and the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People successfully coordinated the rescue efforts, which were finally completed by a Danish helicopter, as SegelReporter documented.
With a total of 86 yachts, the MidsummerSail, in its tenth edition, has presented itself as the largest fleet in the history of the event. This regatta, which stretches over 900 nautical miles from Wismar to Töre, is considered one of the longest and most demanding in the Baltic Sea. The participating yachts included both individuals and crews who competed in various categories.
View of summer
The MidsummerSail is more than just a competition – it is also an experience in the “white summer nights” of the Baltic Sea. A new “Race Village” was set up in the Boltenhagen Marina, where participants not only exchanged their experiences but also enjoyed the summer ambience. Musical events and a planned light show also provided a festive setting that was reminiscent of the opening on June 21st, the day of the summer solstice, as Wismar.fm reported.
More boats are expected in Töre next week and the participants can hope for beautiful days on the Baltic Sea. The MidsummerSail remains an unforgettable adventure for sailors and spectators alike, and the anticipation for the coming years is already palpable.
