Triumph and drama: Flying Dragon wins MidsummerSail 2025!
Töre, Schweden - The MidsummerSail 2025 impressively showed last Friday what sailing has to offer challenges and victories. The "Flying Dragon", a Dragonfly 40 Trimaran, was the first boat that reached the yellow bin of Töre and thus secured victory in the tenth edition of this legendary regatta. The crew under Skipper Jens Thuesen mastered the route of over 1,670 kilometers in a time of 5 days, 19 hours and 54 minutes - just a little more than a day longer than the winning boat of the last Midsummerail. Nevertheless, no new record was set up, as NDR reported.
The challenge was great, because changing wind directions and strengths made the "Flying Dragon" to create. A weak wind after the start in Wismar contributed to the missed record time. In addition, unforeseen weather conditions were waiting for the participants when a low pressure area was all the more hectic and at the same time led to around 20 sailing boats.
a challenging race
The prominent participants also included Rüdiger Schwarz, who competed with his trimaran "Avanza". During the race there was a dangerous incident when his boat capsized wind at about 20 knots. Fortunately, this distress end ended lightly: Schwarz was able to save itself on its overturned boat, and the German Society for the rescue of shipwrecked coordinated successfully the rescue measures, which were finally completed by a Danish helicopter, how Sailing reporter documented.
With a total of 86 yachts, the MidsummerSail presented itself in its tenth edition as the largest fleet in the history of the event. This regatta, which extends over 900 nautical miles from Wismar to Töre, is considered one of the longest and most demanding in the Baltic Sea. Among the participating yachts were both a lone fighter and crews, which compete in different categories.
view of the summer
The MidsummerSail is more than just a competition - it is also an experience in the "white summer nights" of the Baltic Sea. A new “Race Village” was set up in the Marina Boltenhagen, where participants not only exchanged their experiences, but also enjoyed the summer ambience. Music events and a planned light show also ensured a festive setting, which was reminiscent of the opening on June 21, the day of the summer solstice, as [wismar.fm] (https://www.wismar.fm/und-wieder-lockt-die--midsummersable-startet-- 2022/) reported.
More boats in Töre will be expected in the coming week, and the participants can hope for beautiful days on the Baltic Sea. The MidsummerSail remains an unforgettable adventure for sailors and spectators Alike, and the anticipation for the coming years is already noticeable.
