Water bike in Schwerin: A new trend on Lake Burgsee!
The water bike project in Schwerin has captured the hearts of cyclists and nature lovers. After a year of intensive design work under the direction of Christoph Thiery, the water bike was finally allowed to go out into the world - its maiden voyage took place on May 10th of this year. The innovative vehicle was presented to the public as part of the Five Lakes Run, and the initial reactions have been consistently positive. Northern Courier reports that the water bicycle is composed of two bicycle frames, a propeller and two pontoons.
A special highlight awaits citizens on July 5th, when a test drive on Lake Burgsee is offered. This campaign is organized by the Schwerin Radentscheid and the ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club), both of which are committed to a better cycle path network in the city. This desire for more safety on the streets is all the more urgent since the city administration is aware of a list of 140 points that will be addressed in the coming years. Among other things, a safe bicycle path through the city center is required, which very much meets the needs of cyclists.
A collaborative effort by engineers
But what is really behind the water bike? A group of five retired engineers put the idea into action by creating a new water bike out of two catamaran skids in dire need of repair. After extensive repairs, the project has now been successfully completed. The water bike was presented on May 10th at a street festival under the motto “Lively Friedrichstrasse” on the south bank of the Pfaffenteich. After a short introduction, visitors had the opportunity to take a ride themselves. Life jackets and a lifebuoy, which were always on board, ensured the safety of the passengers. This event offered a colorful supporting program with live music and activities for children. Schwerin.news highlights that discussions also took place on the future development of Friedrichstrasse, which is to be designed as a traffic-calmed zone without parked cars.
At the event, local initiatives presented concepts for spatial justice and alternative mobility. A cargo bike was available for test rides and participants were encouraged to contribute their ideas for Friedrichstrasse.
Positive developments in cycling
The developments in Schwerin are part of a larger trend towards more mobility in cycling, which is not only in demand in the state capital. Similar projects are taking place in other regions, such as in the local community of Esch, where closing gaps in the cycle path network is being promoted. The project involves the construction of a new cycle path using renewable energy and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. Mobility Forum shows that this is not just about improving the infrastructure, but also about creating barrier-free access. The old bridges over the Salm are to be replaced to ensure safe crossing.
All of these initiatives – from water bikes to street festivals to comprehensive projects to improve the cycle path network – represent a positive change in mobility culture. In this regard, Schwerin seems to be on the right track to offer its citizens not only a better transport network, but also a more livable city.
