Dance odyssey through Chemnitz: Discover hidden treasures!

On June 26, 2025, things will really get going in Chemnitz: the dance project “Odyssey in C” heralds a unique journey of discovery through the city. The starting shot goes off at 8:00 a.m. at the Markersdorfer Oasis and the Thiele butcher shop on the Sonnenberg. The premiere promises a fascinating experience that not only stimulates the senses, but also underlines the cultural reorientation of the city as part of the European Capital of Culture 2025. As n-tv reports, viewers will be confronted with contemporary dance in a total of 18 stations, which is inspired by James Joyce's novel “Ulysses”.

The event actively involves citizens and visitors: those who embark on the journey can enjoy dance performances in well-known and lesser-known places such as the castle cemetery, the city library and the Karl Marx Monument. The spectacular daily program is rounded off with the grand finale at 10 p.m. in the opera house. In the following days, until June 29th, further performances are planned that invite the city to dance and discover. Entry is free at most stations, although performances in the opera house require a 25 euro ticket.

A festival in motion

The “Odyssey in C” is part of the “TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ” festival, which will take place in Chemnitz from June 18th to 29th, 2025. This international festival for contemporary and urban dance has set itself the goal of inspiring audiences beyond the classical stages. As Theater Chemnitz explains, the focus is on public space and the thematization of new perspectives in social interaction. These are not just dance performances, but a reflection of a Europe full of stories and a spirit of the future.

The invited international ballet companies present choreographies lasting around 20 to 30 minutes at the various stations. The companies involved, including Panama Pictures from the Netherlands and Cie Retouramont from France, developed extraordinary pieces during a residency in Chemnitz, which are now being premiered in the city. The entire event is not only a celebration of movement, but also a humorous and in-depth examination of urban spaces.
