Usedom at the limit: suffering from overtourism and traffic jam problems!

Usedom, the sunny pearl of the Baltic Sea, has rapidly developed into the most sought-after holiday destination in northeast Germany in recent years. Loud NDR Over a million tourists visit Germany's second largest island every year, with over six million overnight stays last year - an increase of four percent. But this tourism boom not only brings joy, but also some huge challenges.

The number of guests grows every year, by more than 72 percent since 2000. The seaside resort of Heringsdorf is the absolute favorite among holidaymakers. But these high visitor numbers have their downsides: overcrowded streets, parking problems and growing environmental pollution, such as water shortages, are everyday companions. The state tourism association emphasizes that Usedom is operating at its capacity limits and overtourism is not an acute problem, but the situation is tense and the challenges are enormous.

Fight against overtourism

The term overtourism refers to the excessive number of visitors that affects both the quality of life of locals and the experiences of travelers. On Usedom, this is reflected in traffic jams and a lack of parking spaces, especially in the high season. With up to 15,000 vehicles on the B111 every day, the transport network is put under considerable strain. In order to strengthen local public transport, it is important to make better use of existing rail and ferry connections.

The regional train line RB 23 connects Züssow with Świnoujście, while the regional train 24 between Peenemünde and Zinnowitz is often overcrowded. A new ferry connection across the Szczecin Lagoon is planned to commute between Neuwarp, Świnoujście and Stettin on weekends in order to better distribute the number of travelers. In some communities, trips with the Usedomer Bäderbahn (UBB) are even included in the spa cards to relieve traffic.

But these are just a few approaches to improve the situation. Four master's students from HafenCity University Hamburg are currently conducting an online survey among residents in order to analyze the effects of tourism in more detail and to develop an integrated catalog of measures. According to the initial results, there is a strong need from residents to be more involved in planning to address the challenges of tourism, such as City and green reported.

New strategies are required

The tourism industry is under pressure to find innovative solutions to the increasing challenges. According to a survey by the Quality Travel Alliance, 42% of travel professionals expect a growing awareness of overtourism among travelers. There are already some suggestions for reducing the problem: visitor limits, digital reservation systems and better management of tourist flows could help to ease the overcrowded attractions. Association office gives numerous examples from popular tourist destinations that have successfully implemented similar measures.

Overall, it remains to be hoped that Usedom can find the right balance between tourism and quality of life for its residents. Because one thing is clear: the beauty and diversity of this island are a valuable asset that needs to be preserved.
