48 new Junior Ranger conquer the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve!
What is happening in the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve? A lot, especially for the little ones among us. On July 2, 2025, 48 new junior rangers from the primary schools in Putbus, Binz, Sellin and Mönchgut were ceremoniously introduced into their new roles. These committed children not only breastfed their thirst for knowledge last year, but also actively contributed to the preservation of their region. They were regularly on exploring tours to the dune areas, Baltic beaches as well as forests and meadows and discovered fascinating aspects of nature.
As part of their activities, the Junior Ranger built nesting aids for domestic songbirds such as Bachstlze, Hausrotchwanz and Zaunkönig. The final event, which took place in the form of a Waldalley, served not only for playful knowledge check, but also to certify their new knowledge to the children. Because all children mastered the challenges with flying colors and proudly received their junior ranger passes.a valuable habitat
The term "biosphere reserve" consists of the Greek "organic" for life and the Latin "reserve" for preservation. The aim of this reserve, explains the Junior Ranger website, is to preserve a wide range of habitats. The Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve extends over an area of around 23,000 hectares, quantitatively divided into 11,800 hectares of water and 11,200 hectares of land. Numerous plant and animal species live here in different habitats that need to be protected.
The region not only offers a unique living space with its forests, meadows and Baltic Sea beaches, but also attracts many tourists who want to experience nature in its species -rich form. In addition to beech forests, there are also old primeval forests as well as exciting landscapes such as salt and wet meadows.
continuation of Junior Ranger AG
Good to know: The Junior Ranger-AG will continue at the four primary schools in the biosphere reserve in the coming school year. This underlines the continued commitment of the teachers and the rangers who are campaigning for the environmental education of children. This approach is part of other initiatives that have already been launched in Germany to promote the nature closeness of children. Programs such as NEMOS natural experiences that have been active since 2019 show how important it is to raise awareness of the environment and nature at an early stage.
With the Junior Ranger program, which is part of the environmental pedagogical measures in the biosphere reserve, children are introduced to topics such as habitats in forest, meadow and water. The possibility of dealing with the environment helps the next generation to have a good knack for the protection of nature.
