Fraudsters in the Greifswald district: animal protection masquerade exposed!

There are currently fraudsters active in Cologne who pose as members of the Tierrettung Vorpommern-Greifswald e. V. and ask for donations at front doors. The animal rescue itself has drawn attention to this and is warning urgently about these crooks. On their Facebook page they announce that real members never collect at doors unannounced. If donations are needed, this will only be done by prior arrangement, for example when collecting donations in kind. Anyone who observes suspicious activity should contact animal rescue at 0151-21446269 or the police directly to prevent abuse and stop the fraudsters.

The situation surrounding the scammers is a sign of a widespread problem in the field of animal welfare. In recent years, more and more people have come across the machinations of fake rescue videos published on social media such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. These videos, documented by the Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (SMACC), show animals in so-called “rescue scenarios,” which are often staged to generate clicks and advertising revenue. According to SMACC's report, 66.9% of the videos analyzed are staged as dangerous situations, followed by unrealistic depictions and veterinary treatments.

A growing problem

These fake rescue videos are not only entertaining, they also pose serious danger. Over 605 such videos were evaluated over a three-month period, which together received more than 576 million views. The majority of these videos feature vulnerable animals, such as cats and puppies, depicted in dangerous situations where they are being “rescued,” although these scenarios are often fictional. What is particularly alarming is that 92% of affected animals are mammals, including many young animals.

Additionally, there have been reports of creators of these videos soliciting donations while claiming to be collecting for the supposed rescues. SMACC encourages all users to be vigilant and question content that appears too shocking or too good to be true. Many of these videos inspire sympathy among viewers and lead them to support the sites behind these scams. SMACC's A.R.C. test provides a way to detect fake rescues by examining the authenticity of the animal rescue organizations, the reality of the situation, and the repetition of plot elements in the videos.

Raising awareness is the be-all and end-all

The Vorpommern-Greifswald animal rescue service not only offers telephone advice and help in emergencies, but is also actively involved in animal protection by, among other things, rescuing large animals and searching for missing animals using drones and search dogs. It's important to support real animal rescue work and stay away from scammers and fake rescue content. Be vigilant and report suspicious activity to help genuine animal rescue organizations continue their valuable work and stop abuse.
