Drama in Western Pomerania: Horse breaks through bridge and gets stuck!

Last Wednesday afternoon there was a dramatic incident in Western Pomerania: a horse broke through a bridge and landed in the ditch below. This happened near Weitenhagen when the animal fell into the soggy ground and got stuck in the mud over 20 centimeters deep. The incident occurred when the horse was trying to find its way and unfortunately fell through the bridge, putting its life in acute danger. The alerted emergency services had to act quickly to save the valuable animal. The Vorpommern-Greifswald animal rescue service was called at 4:45 p.m. and arrived at the scene of the accident together with the volunteer fire department.

The rescue turned out to be challenging as a classic rescue was not possible under the circumstances. The mud that set in made it difficult for the helpers to free the horse. Therefore, a veterinarian was called in to anesthetize the horse in order to immobilize the animal and make the rescue work easier. Together with the fire department, the rescue workers managed to gently free the horse from its predicament after more than three hours of work. The operation once again showed how important cooperation is between animal rescue organizations and the fire department, which are well trained and equipped for such acute emergency situations, as SV Sachsen also describes.

Dedicated animal rescue in action

Animal rescue is a topic that often only becomes relevant in emergencies in Germany. The fire brigade plays a crucial role in this: it helps when animals are in acute danger to life, be it in burning buildings or, as in this case, when rescuing animals from unfortunate situations. Although many people don't often think about it, most fire departments now have dedicated teams and vehicles that focus on animal emergencies.

The animal rescue organizations are not classic animal protection associations, but focus on acute emergencies, as the example in Western Pomerania shows. Volunteers and donations are essential for their work. Many of these organizations offer practical courses on how to deal with animals in emergency situations in order to prepare yourself for an emergency. Nevertheless, the cost coverage for such operations varies and can be significant depending on the federal state, as is clear from the example of Bavaria and other federal states. While in Bavaria there are often no costs for animal rescue by the fire department, the situation can be different in other regions, meaning that animal owners have to bear the financial consequences. In 2014, for example, a fox terrier owner in Berlin had to pay 10,000 euros for a fire brigade operation; stray animals are often affected, and in some cases the municipality can step in.

Rescuing animals in emergency situations is often complex and time-consuming. As the incident in Western Pomerania shows, such operations can also bring the community together. The horse was saved thanks to the dedicated work of everyone involved, which is a beautiful example of solidarity and teamwork.
