Fire brigade youth in chaos: competition with incorrect evaluation and disqualifications!
The district selection of the youth fire brigades in Western Pomerania-Greifswald recently took place on an explosive weekend in Ferdinandshof. Almost 15 youth brigades from the district, with a total of many committed young people, proved that young fire brigade work is very popular here. The challenges consisted of a fire attack without water and a 400-meter obstacle course that required skill and team spirit. But not everything went smoothly, either Northern Courier reported: A scoring issue caused some confusion as an incorrect program was used to award points. This glitch led to a recalculation of the results, which ultimately led to the best teams being chosen at the negotiating table rather than on the competition field.
At the end of the competition, five youth teams were qualified for the national competition in July in Ticino. The qualified teams are:
- Lodmanshagen/Kemnitz I
- Torgelow
- Lubmin I
- Ducherow I
- Rubenow
Interestingly, the runner-up, the youth fire department from Medow, decided not to take part due to time constraints. The remaining youth officers have also agreed to only send one team to the state competition.
Problems and solutions
Association boss Erfried Firtzlaff intervened and praised the constructive exchange between the youth officers. He also announced that he would focus on improving the training of competition judges and organize an information event for youth officials. These measures are urgently needed to avoid such misunderstandings in the future. When asked, the association confirmed that the topics were of utmost importance and that they wanted to learn from them.
The placements in the district finals show how urgent such competitions are to promote team spirit and the skills of young people:
| Place | Youth fire brigade |
|---|---|
| 1. | Lodmanshagen/Kemnitz I |
| 2. | Medov |
| 3. | Torgelow |
| 4. | Lubmin I |
| 5. | Ducherow I |
| 6. | Ducherow II |
| 7. | Lodmanshagen/Kemnitz II (equal points) |
| 7. | Rubenov (equal points) |
| 8. | Derzekov |
| 9. | Polzow |
| 10. | Ferdinandshof |
| 11. | Karlshagen |
| 12. | Lubmin II |
| 13. | Ducherow III |
In the end, the Ueckermünde youth fire department was excluded from the competition because it was disqualified for violating the rules. Such incidents demonstrate the importance of clearly communicating and adhering to rules and procedures.
A look at the entire situation
At the same time, another district competition took place in the Rostock district, in which almost 30 youth fire departments with around 350 participants took part. Here, the Bützow, Ziesendorf and Nienhagen youth fire departments were able to take the first three places and thus also qualify for the state competition. NDR emphasizes that this competitive framework is also important for young firefighters, as it not only promotes team spirit, but also awakens enthusiasm for the fire service.
Overall, it can be seen that the youth fire brigades in the region work with foresight and promote the potential of their members in the best possible way. The major challenges of the past few weeks could serve as an opportunity to learn from mistakes and continually improve the quality of the competitions.
