Rolf C. Hemke becomes artistic director at Theater Vorpommern!

A fresh wind will blow over this from November Theater Western Pomerania, because Rolf C. Hemke takes over the artistic direction. The 53-year-old native of Cologne most recently worked as artistic director of the renowned Weimar Art Festival, which is considered the largest festival for contemporary arts in East Germany. Hemke's commitment means a return to individual division management, after a four-person committee had held this task since last summer.

“I see my new role as an opportunity to provide fresh impetus in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania,” says Hemke, who would like to continue the theater’s tradition. His contract initially runs until July 2028, and he will take the first steps in his new position after the last edition of the art festival, which will take place from August 20th to September 7th.

Personnel changes in the theater

In addition to Hemke's appointment, Aurelia Eggers will be the new opera director of Theater Vorpommern. She succeeds Wolfgang Berthold, whom Eggers replaced in office in 2021. Eggers has had extensive experience as a freelance director at well-known stages at home and abroad since 2005 and through her career she has developed a feel for the needs and wishes of the audience.

But these are not the only changes. The structure of the artistic direction will also be reunited. Rolf Dörnen gave up his role as artistic director at his own request in order to be able to concentrate more on his work as ballet director. These new arrangements are a sign of the Theater Vorpommern, which is restructuring its staff and wants to offer the desired artistic delight.

Outlook on the new schedule

The anticipation is increasing because next Monday the theater's new schedule for the cities of Greifswald, Stralsund and Putbus will be presented. This announcement piques the curiosity of theater lovers in the region and beyond. With Hemke's upcoming takeover and the change in the opera ensemble, many surprises and creative highlights could await the audience.

It remains to be seen how developments in Theater Vorpommern will continue and what new impulses Rolf C. Hemke will provide. Culture is a dynamic field, and with the right leaders like Hemke and Eggers, the theater will remain a wonderful place of inspiration and exchange for many citizens and visitors.
