Two children seriously injured: shock accident in Greifswald!

On July 12, 2025, a worrying traffic accident occurred in Greifswald that brought the safety of children into focus. Two cars collided in front of the Volksstadion when a 45-year-old man tried to turn right into a parking lot. Unfortunately, a 39-year-old driver assumed the man was turning left and continued driving, resulting in the two vehicles colliding. Two children were injured in this incident, one of whom fortunately only suffered minor injuries, while the other, a 13-year-old passenger, had to be taken to hospital with serious injuries. All affected children were immediately taken to local hospitals, while the property damage amounted to around 30,000 euros, and both vehicles had to be towed away, as n-tv.de reported.

Accident statistics are alarming

Accidental injuries represent one of the greatest health risks for children in Germany. According to kindersicherheit.de, accidents are the most common cause of death for children aged one and over. One in eight injured children has to be hospitalized for at least one night. As a rule, most accidents occur in the home environment, followed by schools and leisure centers. For example, in 2021, 43.8% of accidents happened at home, while 24.2% took place in schools or other care facilities. The need for preventive measures and education is therefore essential.

Protective measures are urgently needed

In a comprehensive analysis, the Federal Ministry of Health makes it clear that injury-related incidents in children aged 1 to 17 are the most common cause of hospital admissions. It is estimated that at least 1.88 million children under the age of 15 require medical care after an accident each year. What is particularly alarming is the fact that 153 children were lost after an accident in Germany in 2019 alone. These numbers underline the urgency of prevention measures, because many of these accidents could be prevented through correct behavior, education and appropriate protective measures, according to bundesgesundheitsministerium.de.

The sad record of accidents

  • Jedes achte verletzte Kind brauchte stationäre Behandlung.

The numbers make it clear: accidents involving children should not be underestimated, and society is called upon to raise awareness of the safety of the youngest. We can only hope that the tragic events in Greifswald are a wake-up call for all road users to act responsibly and always keep the safety of our children in mind.
