Two accidents on Autobahn 20: Rain causes drivers to skid!
Unfortunately, in adverse weather conditions, the dangers of driving on wet roads often only become apparent when it is too late. Today, on July 10, 2025, two accidents took place on Autobahn 20 in Western Pomerania, which impressively prove this. The incidents occurred on Wednesday evening near Strasburg when the two drivers lost control of their vehicles due to rainwater on the road and had an accident.
As Nordkurier reports, a 37-year-old man skidded in his VW Passat. He lost control due to aquaplaning and crashed into the outside guardrail. The result: a damaged emergency call box and accident damage of at least 50,000 euros. Just ten minutes later, a 39-year-old driver experienced the same fate in his VW Golf and collided with the central barrier.
Fortunately, both drivers only sustained minor injuries. However, the rescue effort was considerable and took around three hours, which meant that only one lane of the northbound carriageway was passable. What is particularly noteworthy is that the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region has been suffering from low rainfall for weeks, while the coastal strip along the Baltic Sea has not been spared from the rain.
What is aquaplaning?
Aquaplaning occurs when the tires' contact with the road is interrupted by water and control of the vehicle is lost. According to ADAC, the dangers are increased by an increase in the water level on all roads, especially in depressions or underpasses. The problem can also occur at speeds below 80 km/h. Especially in circumstances where the combination of worn tires and heavy rain brings with it a high risk of aquaplaning.
Another key issue is that a tire tread depth of less than 3.5 mm is considered dangerous because water drainage is impaired. It is therefore advisable for drivers to check their tires regularly to avoid such situations.
Safety measures and behavior in the event of aquaplaning
How can you get through the pouring rain relaxed and safely? Automotive Aktuell has some useful tips on this: First of all, it is essential to stay calm. In the event of aquaplaning, you should release the accelerator pedal without frantically pulling on the steering wheel. The steering wheel should be held straight until the tires make contact with the road again.
The ADAC also recommends turning on the dipped headlights and maintaining a sufficient distance from other vehicles - after all, a greater safety distance ensures that you don't immediately find yourself in a critical situation. When cornering, it is advisable not to turn the wheels abruptly and at the same time avoid violent steering movements.
Especially on rainy days, it is important to drive with foresight and be aware of the dangers of aquaplaning. This way you avoid unpleasant surprises on the road that could have fatal consequences.
