Construction work on Rügen: No train traffic for a week in November!

From the beginning of November, things will temporarily be quiet on the rails on the picturesque island of Rügen. Long-distance and local transport will be suspended for around a week due to extensive construction and maintenance work by Deutsche Bahn. As the Baltic Sea newspaper reported, the closure will begin on the evening of November 7th and end on November 14th, 2025. During this time, rail travelers between Stralsund and Rügen will have to change to rail replacement buses.

This could be a challenge, especially for travelers from Sassnitz and Binz who want to head towards the mainland. The change means longer travel times: a train journey from Sassnitz to Stralsund takes around an hour, while the bus journey can take up to an hour and a half. However, to accommodate travelers, the buses start earlier. For example, the bus from Binz leaves at 12:11 p.m. instead of 1:00 p.m. to ensure connections in Stralsund.

Important details about rail replacement transport

Long-distance travelers also have to adapt to changes. Long-distance trains, such as IC and ICE trains, end and start in Stralsund. Travelers must expect a transfer time of 30 to 45 minutes to the replacement buses. A small consolation for school bus users: Odeg has set up additional bus departures between Bergen and Sassnitz to support student transport. However, these additional buses are intended for all travelers, regardless of their destination. Bicycle transport is limited on buses; Wheelchairs and strollers have priority.

Another point that travelers should note: There is no change in Lietzow, as the replacement buses go directly via Lietzow. The construction work itself has some aspects that affect both train traffic and noise pollution. Excavators and gravel machines will be in use on Rügen, which will certainly cause noise.

Extent of construction work

A central part of the construction work includes the construction of a new electronic signal box in Borchtitz, the renewal of switches and the maintenance of tracks and carriageways. These measures are necessary to ensure the quality and safety of rail transport in the long term. The Northern Courier highlights that during these nine days there will be no regular train services throughout the island, which represents a significant change for residents and tourists.

The Rügen region is a popular destination for holidaymakers and locals, so all travelers affected by these changes should be well informed. It remains to be hoped that the construction work will be carried out quickly and smoothly so that trains can soon travel across the island again.
