In the small community of Born in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, a very special measure is currently underway: the Fischerkirche, a 90-year-old building, is covered with a large tarpaulin to make a stubborn problem at all-the woodworm. A pesticide from Roggentin has taken on the task of combating the controversial insect that gnaws invisible, but all the more vastly on the valuable wood of the church. The measures are required because wood pests find optimal living conditions in historical buildings such as churches. The larvae hatch after two to three weeks and can develop over a period of two to eight years before they appear as a beetle. The damage that these little critters can do on cultural assets is enormous.

The fight against the wood pests

To free the church from the wood pest, a special gas, the so -called sulfuryl difluoride, is used. This healthy gas does not damage pigments or materials such as paper and leather, which it does perfectly for combating woodworms in churches and historical buildings. Once initiated, the gas must remain in the enveloped church for about two to three days to reliably boil the pests. The tightness of the tarpaulin is monitored by special measuring devices and warning signs should warn the public of the work. These professional measures are both urgently and essential, because the preservation of the church and its fantastic figures as well as the bars with sayings is the overarching goal.

So far, the Born residents have confidence in the upcoming celebrations that will accompany the 90th birthday of their church. A festival service with music and many joyful moments is being planned. The approval of the parish council and the preservation of monuments has already been obtained to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

The IVA Magazin points out that it is helpful to heat living spaces sufficiently because a higher temperature reduces the wood moisture. Unnecessary water when wiping the wooden floors should also be avoided, since woodworms find optimal conditions with a wood moisture of 14 to 16 percent.
