Vorpommern-Rügen District Council: 58 million euro deficit forced budget freeze!

At a meeting on Monday evening, the Vorpommern-Rügen district council decided on a budget freeze, which was made necessary by a considerable deficit in the budget of 60 million euros. The measure aims to save 12 million euros by the end of the current year. That gave Ostsee Zeitung known.

The background to the tense financial situation is, in particular, the high social spending and the costs of local public transport. The free daycare offers also contribute to the additional burden on the household. District Administrator Stefan Kerth, non-party, stated that the implementation of these savings measures is necessary in order to be released from the provisional budget management. This is the only way it is possible to make voluntary spending on culture or sport again, which could increase the attractiveness of the district, reports NDR.

Savings in detail

The planned savings include, among other things, not filling 50 vacancies, which alone should save 3 million euros. In addition, 3.8 million euros less will be made available for the maintenance of district-owned roads and buildings. Particular attention was paid to a showcase project to promote hydrogen technology; Here one million euros was cut from the budget. These measures are part of the requirements of the Ministry of the Interior in Schwerin, which is calling for savings or increases in revenue.

When it comes to financial planning for the future, it may be time to increase the district levy for 2026. This currently stands at 42.09 percent, and an adjustment to up to 45.42 percent cannot be ruled out. The district council is now faced with the challenge of finding a balance between necessary savings measures and the needs of the citizens.

The decision to freeze the budget is a clear signal that there is an urgent need for action in the Vorpommern-Rügen district in order to overcome the financial challenges and at the same time not lose sight of future-oriented projects.
