Pensioner beautifies the stadium fence in Stralsund: A volunteer position with heart!

A shining example of civic engagement comes from Stralsund, where 65-year-old Mario Kramm has been working on the old stadium fence on Frankendamm since May 2025. The fence, which is a proud 70 years old, is currently being repainted by Kramm in the city's national colors - Stralsund red. This is not only done for beautification reasons, but also to make the fence shine in new splendor in time for the 165th anniversary of TSV 1860 Stralsund in September. According to NDR, Kramm receives active support from the city administration, which provides both tools and paint. The whole thing is also supported by volunteers from the neighborhood and the sports club, which results in a wonderful sense of community.

For Kramm, this is not only a Herculean effort, but also an opportunity to give something back to his adopted homeland. Such voluntary activities are of great importance in Germany and show how important it is to stand up for the community. Comprehensive statistics show that sports clubs are the most common form of volunteer work, with almost 86,000 organizations. In Germany, over a million people volunteer in the fire department and almost 900,000 volunteers in church areas, as described in Statista.

Sporting success offers community

But it's not just the paint pots and brushes that are at work in Stralsund, the sporting scene is also impressive. TSV 1860 Stralsund recently shone with an impressive performance: in the friendly against TSV Graal-Müritz they achieved a clear 5-1 win. Niklas Reimelt gave the team the lead in the 5th minute. Worthy of note: The goal scorers Michael Lindberg, Martin Otto and Daniel Hartz made everything clear and made the team celebrate. This is also highlighted by the Ostsee Zeitung.

SG Empor Richtenberg can also look forward to a strong test match success: They defeated SV Barth 6-1. Ousmane Konate, who scored twice, contributed significantly to this success. These sporting achievements show how lively the local football scene is and that cohesion and team spirit are strong, both on the pitch and in the community.

The importance of volunteering

How can you see that volunteers are becoming increasingly important, especially in times of competition and pressure to perform? Voluntary support, be it in culture, sport or social matters, is not only a matter of the heart, but also a sign of our society, which is based on solidarity and commitment. International Volunteer Day on December 5th reminds us how valuable the commitment of each individual is. This applies not only to large events, but also to small local initiatives, such as those run by Mario Kramm. It's clear: There's something going on, and the lively community in Stralsund shows us that!
