Sea rescuers save single-handed sailors after a shipwreck alarm in Zingst!

Good afternoon, dear readers! Today, June 16, 2025, we received news of a successful sea rescue operation off the picturesque Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. There a single-handed sailor was called in distress in fresh winds and difficult conditions. The NDR reports on a dramatic incident in the Bodden waters, where the sailor unfortunately suffered shipwreck with his boat and it filled with water.

The incident occurred in the Meiningenstrom, not far from the Opinion Bridge, where the sailor, in order to avoid anything worse, steered his boat to the bottom and at the same time made an emergency call. But the weather conditions weren't exactly ideal - there was a brisk wind blowing at force four to five. Fortunately, the sea rescuers from Zingst were on the scene quickly and showed that you can rely on them.

Rescue operation by sea rescuers

When the emergency services arrived, it turned out that the sailor had already stopped the water from entering and pumped the water out of the boat before the sea rescue workers arrived. Under these circumstances, the helpers were able to act quickly: the damaged sailing boat was towed to Zingst with the sea rescue boat “E. RUHFUS”. However, the exact circumstances that led to the boat filling up are still unclear.

The German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) has been responsible for sea rescue in German waters since it was founded in 1865. Their area of operation extends over around 3,660 kilometers of coastline from the mouth of the Ems to the Pomeranian Bay. According to the German flag The DGzRS maintains several rescue stations where around 180 permanent and over 800 volunteer sea rescuers offer guidelines for safety and quick help in the event of sea emergencies.

The role of sea rescue services

Modern rescue measures and the selfless helpfulness of sea rescuers are crucial factors for the success of sea rescue. According to the Sea rescue website Organization and effective resources are essential to help people in distress at sea. Technology has developed rapidly, especially since the 19th century, but humanity is still at the heart of emergency services. The DGzRS is financed exclusively through donations and contributions, which makes the need to support the organization with our support clearer.

So we can say: The quick response of the sea rescue workers in Zingst saved lives and shows once again how important their work is for safe waters. Let us all say a good word for the courageous men and women of the DGzRS who stand by around the clock to assist seafarers in distress.
