Stralsund is becoming a solar boat stronghold: imaginative boats against time!

The sun was shining, even if the clouds passed a little over it, when the eagerly awaited solar boat race took place in Stralsund on July 17, 2025. Several hundred visitors gathered in the Knieper West district to marvel at the creative work of over 80 students from primary and secondary schools. The young engineers competed against each other with their self-built solar boats and demonstrated what can be created from everyday materials such as plastic bottles, leftover wood and polystyrene packaging. The event is an integral part of Stralsund's event culture and has been taking place every year since 2016 around Renewable Energy Day, as NDR reports.

What makes the solar boat race so special? Not only does it promote understanding of sustainable energy, but it also brings together teams and individuals to take on the challenge of constructing a working solar boat. The boats must float, be stable and suitable for a solar panel set. Basically, anything is allowed as long as the materials are recyclable or reusable. To support this, the Hanseatic city of Stralsund provides the required solar boat sets free of charge, as the information from Klimaschutz Stralsund shows.

Food and entertainment

The event took place at the Green Farm, where the first visitors arrived at 12:30 p.m. For the hungry guests there were bratwursts priced at 3 euros per portion, which had to be ordered in advance. The race day opened at 2 p.m. with solar boats ready to launch, and after the competition everyone was able to enjoy coffee and cake in the café – while stocks lasted!

What was particularly pleasing for the participants was that not only were the fastest boats awarded, but also the beautifully designed ones, which further rewarded the creativity and commitment of the young people. Energy Day, which was paused in 2025, is scheduled to return next year under a new concept. This year, the solar boat race was the main focus for visitors, who admired the innovation and dedication of the students.

Sustainability in focus

But awareness of sustainable energy is not only promoted in Stralsund. Overall, projects dedicated to climate change and raising awareness of renewable energies are becoming increasingly important. As GreenKama highlights, such school projects not only teach young people technical knowledge, but also strengthen their teamwork and problem-solving skills. Examples from countries such as Denmark, Kenya and India show how important these initiatives are in shaping a sustainable future.

Overall, the solar boat race in Stralsund not only aims to offer fun and excitement, but also opens up a space for learning and development. Whether through the construction of solar cookers, wind turbines or the practical use of solar energy - the possibilities are diverse and important for future generations. Because one thing is clear: Sustainable solutions are not only necessary, they are the basis for a better future.
