Future of Western Pomerania-Rügen: District election and zoo innovations!

The political waves in Western Pomerania-Rügen are rising: Stefan Kerth, the independent candidate, won the district election with an impressive result of 75.1%. But the joy of the victory could be clouded as two objections to the election are currently being examined. These objections represent a possible setback as, similar to the mayoral election in Sagard, they could potentially lead to a repeat election. The district election committee will decide on the objections on September 18th, reports Baltic Sea newspaper.

Various candidates from the political parties took part in the election on May 11th, including the AfD candidate Carlos Rodrigues, who, despite his job as a police officer, hardly made any public appearances. This district election deals with numerous issues that affect the coastal region and the Achterland, which is suffering from a significant development backlog. The financial situation is also tense, as both districts have to record a record deficit in the double-digit million range. This led to lively discussions among the population, in which many mayors and citizens expressed their views NDR held on.

Environment and infrastructure in focus

In addition to the political situation, there is good news from the Sassnitz Zoo: A European mink was taken in here for the first time to support a breeding and reintroduction project. The European mink is critically endangered and had almost disappeared in Central Europe. Next year, a pregnant female could come to Sassnitz to give birth to offspring.

Meanwhile, the old Rügendamm train station in Stralsund is being renovated. The building contractor Matthias Gabel is trying to save the historic building, which has already burned three times. After the renovation, 29 apartments will be built there - an exciting development to revitalize the area. Such investments are important not only for local infrastructure, but also for the economy, which relies on tourism.

Medical developments and cultural highlights

There is also news in the health sector in Stralsund: Tobias Schäfer was introduced as the new chief physician of the emergency room at the Helios Hanseklinikum. He brings valuable experience from Hamburg and Halberstadt and has set himself the goal of significantly improving emergency care in the region and modernizing the existing structures.

To ease the situation, the “Bouquet Binz” wine festival invites you to the Schmachter See until August 17th. Every day from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., visitors can enjoy wines from five winemakers, including Rattey Castle. A highlight of the festival is the artist who shows biopainting with wine as color, delighting not only the palate but also the eyes of the guests.
