Heat pumps conquer MV: Gas heating systems are losing the battle for the future!

A remarkable switch to modern heating technologies can be observed in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. More and more households are relying on heat pumps, while gas heating systems are increasingly falling behind. Loud Northern Courier For the first time in 2023, more heat pumps were installed than gas boilers were replaced in northeastern Germany. Marco Hanke, state guild master and board member of the MV Sanitary, Heating and Air Conditioning Technology Association, speaks of a nationwide trend that has increased since the beginning of 2023.

While the new technologies were initially viewed with skepticism, many customers now report positive experiences with heat pumps. These are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective. Savings of up to 20 percent compared to gas heating are possible, depending on the building and the room temperature. A year ago there was still great reluctance among homeowners, but the high subsidies of up to 70 percent, which significantly reduce the additional costs, make a change attractive.

Funding for heat pumps is imminent

The new federal heating funding will start on January 1, 2024 and is aimed at installing heating systems based on renewable energies. This is made possible by the amendment to the Building Energy Act (GEG) and the federal funding for efficient buildings, which actively supports relevant measures. As the Federal Government announced that owners of single-family homes can receive funding of up to 70 percent of the investment amount when replacing them with a heat pump.

Applications for this funding are submitted via KfW, while the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) remains responsible for heating optimization funding. An income-dependent component for higher funding rates will also be introduced, which creates a positive incentive for households with lower incomes.

A wider range of possibilities

According to information from the German Energy Efficiency Committee the BEG opens up comprehensive funding opportunities. In addition to the bonuses when changing the heating system, efficiency measures such as replacing windows and insulation are also eligible. The funding rates vary depending on the type of heating system and the income of the applicant, which appeals to a broader target group. The new funding measure not only benefits the environmental aspect, but also the economy as a whole. For example, supported measures in the past led to significant savings in final energy and CO2 emissions.

In any case, the switch to renewable heating technologies is in full swing and companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are well prepared for the demand. The order books are often filled six months in advance, which shows that interest in sustainable heating continues to grow. So if you are looking for an attractive heating solution for your home, there are now many options that make both financial and environmental sense.
