White stork offspring in MV: Alarming figures for 2025!
Storks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are once again faced with major challenges. This year the situation for white storks has deteriorated dramatically when it comes to raising their chicks. While they normally lay four to five eggs, this year only one or two young per nest saw the light of day. One reason for this may be the lack of mice and earthworms during the critical rearing phase NDR reported.
What is particularly noteworthy is that this year the storks returned to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the second week of February. But the long drought occurred between January and May, which made it much more difficult for the parents to eat. Despite an initial positive exception in 2024, the preliminary figures show that there is no recovery in the stock. The final results are not expected until October.
Breeding pairs and young animals
Stefan Kroll, head of the state working group for white stork protection at NABU, asks the public to report injured storks, which are affectionately known as “break pilots”. He also advises providing bowls of water on hot days to help the storks.
A look at the inventory development
The comprehensive studies on the population development of the white stork go back to 1934. The distribution of these majestic birds extends across North Africa, Europe and Asia, with main breeding areas in Poland, Alsace and southwestern France. Interestingly, the number of white storks in Germany has increased from around 9,000 breeding pairs in 1934 to over 7,500 breeding pairs in 2019. Accordingly, the storks certainly have their difficulties, but they have also made progress in their population, so that social attention to species and nature conservation should not diminish, as is the case NABU explained.
Overall, it shows that although this year's breeding season is characterized by difficulties, the attention and support of the population could still be of great importance for the survival of the storks. Only with a joint effort can these fascinating birds secure their food supply so that they can continue to show off their majestic flying skills in the sky.
