Wolgast under renovation: New bypass brings back quality of life!

In Wolgast, a city that has made it its mission to improve its quality of life, the new bypass is taking shape. This major project aims to keep through traffic and the flow of holidaymakers away from the city on the popular island of Usedom. Loud NDR Construction is currently in full swing. Around 250,000 tons of sand and earth have already been moved to make space for better traffic management.

The complexity of the project should not be underestimated: bridge construction, extensive earthworks and integration into the existing infrastructure pose a number of challenges. Traffic in the region will be particularly affected in July and August, when over 15,000 vehicles are expected daily.

Details about the construction work

The increasingly visible cuts in the landscape are impressive. Up to nine meters have to be removed; In Bahnhofstrasse they even dug up to twelve meters deep. Entire hills have been moved and 75,000 cubic meters of soil are available for the route expansion. The planned route of the new bypass, which will extend for almost seven kilometers, is almost finished, and asphalting is already in full swing on a section between the B111 and the roundabout.

Another important aspect of the project will be the new belt bridge over the Peene, which connects the island of Usedom with the mainland. With a total length of 1.4 kilometers and a clear height of 42 meters above the Peene river, this structure is not only of considerable technical and architectural interest, but will also be the largest of its kind in Europe Strassen MV reported. The pylons of this impressive bridge will be an impressive 70 meters high, and numerous other structures are also planned, including a Ziese bridge and noise barriers.

Future prospects

The construction of the new bypass is part of a comprehensive measure that also includes the new Bahnhofstrasse in Wolgast and a cycle path on Kreisstrasse 26. The latter will be connected to a bridge over the future bypass to ensure the safety of cyclists. District road 27 and a farm road near the composting plant will also receive a bridge over the bypass.

The continuity of the new bypass is planned for the end of 2028, although one must be prepared for possible delays. In total, the costs for the road and the bridge amount to around 287 million euros. Drivers will therefore have to expect new traffic routes and possibly traffic jams in the near future.

These measures will not only free Wolgast from through traffic, but will also make the city a more attractive destination for tourists and residents. The progress on the construction site already shows that a lot is happening and that further steps in a positive direction are planned.
