Merz urges urgently needed help for the Gaza civilian population

Gazastreifen, Palästina - On June 1, 2025, Chancellor Friedrich Merz made calls to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to urge the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip. According to government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, Merz demanded that sufficient humanitarian aid will immediately get into the Gaza Strip and its secure distribution is guaranteed. The Chancellor made it clear that the security and right of existence of Israel were part of the German state ranks.

In conversation, Merz condemned the terror of Hamas and demanded the release of all hostages and the resignation of the weapons. He expressed hope of an early agreement on a hostage of hostages and a ceasefire. Furthermore, Merz confirmed the Federal Government's view that a negotiated two -state solution offers the best chance for a peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. His choice of words towards the Israeli government has intensified, since both he and Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul believe that Israel has not complied with his promise to ensure the care of the Palestinian civilian population since May 25th.

Humanitarian location in the Gaza Strip

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is alarming. The civilian population has been suffering from violent fights since October 2023, and renewed attacks by the Israeli army on March 2, 2025 further tightened the situation. The blockade of auxiliary goods has led to a dramatic lack of water, electricity and medical care. Food are almost no longer available, which means that many people suffer from hunger. According to current reports, more than 1.9 million people, which corresponds to 90% of the population, have left their homes.

Vital basis such as clean water and food are no longer available to sufficient dimensions. Around 70% of the refugee area in the Gaza Strip are affected by Israeli evacuations and military restricted zones. The population flees from place to place and is looking for refuge in community centers, provisional accommodations or damaged houses. The distribution of relief goods is a significant challenge and has further exacerbated the humanitarian situation, as the Heks reports.

effective humanitarian aid required

The terrorist attacks of Hamas to the Israeli population have triggered a spiral of violence in which thousands of people in Israel, Gaza and the Palestinian areas have lost their lives. The dramatic humanitarian situation demands immediate measures. There is a lack of medical products, medication, clean water and food, which makes the situation even more precarious. The support for the people concerned is based on humanitarian principles, neutrally and adapted to the emergency in the Palestinian areas, in Lebanon and in Israel, in cooperation with local partners, such as the Diakonie Disaster aid describes.
