Knife attack in front of a supermarket: 66-year-old life-threatening injured!

On Saturday evening there was a severe knife attack in front of a supermarket in Berlin-Lichtenberg, in which a 66-year-old man was injured life-threatening. The alleged perpetrator, a 40-year-old, had previously bought the knife and scissors in the supermarket. While he was initially a 22-year attack, which was able to get to safety in time, he seriously injured the 66-year-old. The attacker fled after the crime. The victim had to be operated on and is now in stable condition. So far, the police have not found any signs of a religious or political motivation of the attacker. The 40-year-old was taken into police custody and is to be brought before a judge. The investigation into dangerous bodily harm is in progress, whereby the motives for the deed are still unclear, such as rbb24 reported.

In parallel to this incident, another knife attack in Berlin was reported on the same day. A 29-year-old German man was fatally injured at the Sophie-Charlotte-Platz subway stop. The alleged attacker, a 43-year-old Syrian citizen, was shot by the police after the attack and declared dead a little later. He was already known to the police and also noticed previous assault offenses. Here, too, there is no evidence of an Islamist-terrorist motif, such as ZDF . The incident illustrates the persistent problem of violent crime in the big city.

violent crime in Germany

Violent crimes, which include murder, serious bodily harm and robbery, are less than 4% of all police crimes recorded in Germany. Nevertheless, they leave a significant impression on the feeling of security of the population. According to the BKA figures, the registered cases rose to around 217,000 in 2024, the highest number since 2007. The decline in violent crimes, which started from 2017, ended with Corona pandemic, which resulted in a low of around 165,000 acts of violence in 2021. Since then, however, the number of acts of violence has risen again and is currently almost a third above this low, such as Statista

In 2023, around 2,740 acts of violence against emergency services were also documented, which emphasizes the extreme challenges with which these professional groups are confronted. Factors such as alcohol consumption, drug abuse and mental illnesses often play a role in the development of such violent acts. An alarming result of a survey in May 2024 was that 94% of German violence and aggression against people from politics, police and rescue were considered a major problem. The current incidents in Berlin illustrate urgency to pay more attention to this topic and to strengthen preventive measures.
