New footpath over the Schlei: Bridge work take care of switching!

The work to renew the Schleibrücke near Lindaunis in Schleswig-Holstein, which has been going on since September 2020, are making progress, but with some challenges. Bridge work recently led to the tracks of the lindaunis bridge temporarily not passable. This forces passengers to cross the bridge on foot. The switch from the RB73 of the Nordbahn to the RE72 towards Flensburg can be perceived as uncomfortable by the travelers, but not as serious, since the entire connection from Kiel to Flensburg takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes. The crossing of the footer over the Schlei takes between 15 and 30 minutes and is made possible by a temporary makeshift bridge, which has a length of 264 meters. According to kn--online.de is strongly secured with Barriers, sandbags, building containers and cranes.

The construction work for renewal has been delayed due to technical complexity and new guidelines of the Federal Railway Office. These guidelines concern the longevity and safety of railway bridges and required a revision of the plans, which now shifts the commissioning of the new folding bridge, which was originally planned for 2025, to August 2027. The Deutsche Bahn informed that elaborate Labor-Technical material tests are necessary to to meet new requirements and a tender for the new building is planned for this summer.

about the bridge and construction costs

The Schleibbrücke was originally designed as a folding bridge, with the oldest parts going back to 1892. The new bridge is being wider and receives separate walking and bike paths as well as two lanes for car traffic. Although the costs for the new building are still unclear, an amount of over 84 million euros is expected, which is due to difficult market conditions as well as the effects of the Ukraine war and delivery bottlenecks. Deutsche Bahn understands the inconvenience and emphasizes the importance of the bridge for the region.

The substructure, which includes bridge pillars and abutment, as well as the building construction of the company building should be completed this year as planned. This shows that despite the delays, some construction phases are on schedule. The shipping season has started at Easter as planned and the pedestrian bridge opens six times a day for ships at fixed times.
