EU accelerates asylum procedure: border controls and safe third countries!
Bad Bentheim, Deutschland - The EU Commission has announced that the measures of the new asylum pact will come into force earlier than originally planned. This comes at a time when it is expected that more asylum seekers will arrive in Europe in summer. EU Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, emphasizes the need for faster asylum procedures, especially in view of the pressure on Member States such as Germany, which has already introduced border controls to ensure public security.
The new regulations allow the Member States to apply the concept of the safe third countries. This means that asylum applications do not have to be checked if a safe third -country country offers protection. A positive decline in the number of asylum by 30 percent, supported by cooperation with certain states, is rated by Brunner as encouraging.
border controls in Germany
Germany recently introduced border controls on the border with the Netherlands. These measures are supported by the federal police, which is also equipped with helicopters like the Super Puma to carry out spontaneous checks. This increases mobility and use density in difficult to access border areas. The federal police are planning to increase the control pressure through targeted operations at changing checkpoints and will be based on information obtained.
The Federal Police Inspection Bad Bentheim works on flexible controls in the entire border area to ensure both security and efficiency of the controls. Brunner sees no European law problem in German border controls.
implementation of the migration and asylum package
According to the EU Commission, the migration and asylum package comes into force in June 2026. Nevertheless, the implementation of two important elements of the asylum procedure regulation is to be brought forward in order to enable faster processing of asylum applications with a low chance of success. One component is to create a first EU list of safe countries of origin, which includes Kosovo, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Morocco and Tunisia. Applications from nationals of these countries can be treated in accelerated procedures.
The proposals are based on an analysis of the EU Asy Lagurgent as well as information from Member States and the UNHCR. In addition, it is emphasized that the classification of a country as a safe state of origin does not provide a guarantee for the security of all nationals. Each asylum application must be checked individually in order to meet the different circumstances.
The next challenge for the EU will be to reach an agreement between the European Parliament and the Council on this proposal. The pressure on the EU to provide highly efficient asylum procedures will continue to exist, since the number of asylum seekers will probably increase.

Welt reports that the EU Commission determines in this context that the early application of the provisions for the recognition rate of 20 percent and to name safe countries of origin should ensure additional necessary flexibility, such as germany.revresation.eu makes it available.
